World Cup of Baseball closer than ever?

Heard about this today via radio that the MLB has signed on to do a World Cup that could start as soon as next March.

I don't have much to back it up, but heres a google search...

http://news.google.com/news?q=World+...-8&sa=N&tab=nn

Could be interesting

Yankees are raising a stink about it saying they won't allow their players to play in it.

Jayson Stark had an article about it on ESPN.com earlier in the week. The format they're proposing- single elimination semi-finals and finals- would totally ruin it. It's a shame, because a well-designed baseball World Cup would be one of the coolest things ever.

Not so fast, the Venezuelan team would be very good and US and Puerto Rico would be fantastic as well.

The whole point is having Pros because the Olympics already use amateurs. Though I would agree the amateurs would have more heart.

If they have more heart, how come they are only amateurs? Wouldn't they join some single A or independent teams just for the love of the game?

being a soccer player and fan.... Id love to see a baseball World Cup, if it has any of the excitement built around it, even a 5th of it itll be huge. Id love to see teammates in the MLB face off for their country, it would be a huge help to the MLB itself in all reality as more attention is brought to the players. Lets just hope the bastard businessmen dont screw it up.

I agree. No sporting event comes close to the soccer World Cup for me, as far as excitement goes. I don't think that a baseball World Cup will have as much of it, not at first anyway. It'd probably need some time before it gains the legitimacy and tradition needed to be as coveted a prize as the soccer World Cup is. But, yeah, I'd watch it.
