40 man roster question

Can someone detail how the 40 man actually works? I know that to be on the active (big league) roster, you have to be on the 40 man..so thats 25 of 40 there.

For the final 15 spots though, I want to keep certain minor leaguers for the future and keep them away from the Rule V draft. What are the criteria to be eligible for the RuleV? I've seen players at 19 years old be eligible for the V in their second year since being drafted and playing in A ball. I've got guys in AAA that are not V eligible per the game. So I'm not sure to the "rhyme and reason" on what it takes to be "eligible". This is a definite need to know so I don't lose players. I know I can use the icons to decide...but I'd also like to plan ahead when trading etc on when a player will actually HAVE to be protected.

Thanks for any guidance and input.

The game does put a little symbol next to any players who are eligible for the Rule 5 draft. If you leave any of them off your 40-man roster, they are eligible for the draft.

Official MLB rules are 4 seasons if drafted at 18 or younger or 3 seasons if drafted at 19 or older.

Beyond that, I don't know any of the particulars about what could/does change that or what this game does.
