Question re: DIPS and extra-base hits in OOTP

One thing I've noticed OOTP doesn't do is let users instruct the outfield as to whether to play shallow, straightaway, or deep. There's a setting for "guard lines," but that isn't quite the same thing.

The reason I bring this up is because most of the extra-base hits I'm seeing are balls that the PBP is saying are over my outfielders' heads, that they're having to scramble to get to. Now, I realize DIPS doesn't take defense into account, but it still kind of seems like an odd implementation to me, to create an engine that assumes pitchers don't have an ability to avoid extra-base hits...but that also doesn't give the user any opportunity to array his defense in a way that might at least ameliorate the problem somewhat.

Am I on to something here, or should I assume that outfielders are simply incapable of distinguishing between the pitcher and, say, Gary Sheffield, and just resign myself to years of having 2/3 of the hits I surrender in a game be doubles and triples?

It's my understanding that the PbP is random...the result is not. The game engine comes up with a "it's a double" result, and then randomly selects a PbP sequence for a double.

That said, I've always been very bugged by the lack of being able to assign your outfield. You can't move them in or out, or play to pull or guard the alleys, or anything.

This thread title made me recall something I'd been thinking - does SLG on BIP work out the same as BA on BIP? [Edit - Ah, I see just this issue mention in that current mile-long thread on DIPS. I'll go check that out now.]

This has not bugged me, as these days with the charts team OFs are played the best way they think they can get individual batters out. Besides cases where a Sac Fly beats you, the only time I can think of where the OF defense should not necessarily automatically (as directed by coaches) set up optimally for the batter would be in late innings playing deep to cut off an extra base hit.
