Cutting the static: Ignore list filtering.
Has anyone elses ignore list grown exponentially over the last few days?
I'm starting to wish there was an "ignore everyone but..." Option instead. ![]() But it's amazing how much of the static filling this forum disapates if you start turning off selective voices! Find what you want to read but editing out the junk from those writing what you don't. And I've found that there's a few _enormous_ rambling threads that can be editted down to a fraction of the size by selectively eliminating 4-5 names. And best of all, it actually starts to make sense! If you're worried about having to wade through the crap, just cut out anyone who's full of sh*t. |

I used it for the first time ever today! (Although it had nothing to do with complaining about a release date -- I just never even view those topics)

I would say something right now, but you'll probably never see it.

It's OK, speak freely!
I'd never want to ignore people who have something to say, just those who write alot but don't seem to say anything worth reading. To alot, I myself am probably one of the later, rather than the former.

It's the Pareto Principle (the 80/20 rule).
80% of any given output is typically generated by only 20% of the input. So you can reduce by about 80% the amount of junk you read/see/hear/do by totally ignoring 20% of the biggest offenders. I use this philosophy at work and it works great! |

The Pareto Principle?
Is that sometimes in reference to corporate management theory? I've heard it said that 90% of employee management efforts are directed at only 10% of the staff, but I've never knew it had a name to describe it. Must be like Parsimony or Lorenz's Butterfly. The concept's are more well know than their sources. |

Yes, it's mostly used in corporate mgmt theory.
The story goes: Pareto was an Italian economist. At some point the government was having problems collecting taxes in a particular district. The local tax collector said he needed to hire more collectors in order to meet the governments orders. Pareto showed up and proved that instead of hiring more collectors, the local collector should instead have his existing collectors focus on the 20% who owed the MOST as they were responsible for 80% of the outstanding debt. And the theory grew from that. THat may be the "wives tale" version of how it started but that's how I know it. |
