The Cubs are World Champions

The first season of my Major League Baseball Alternative History League is complete(MLBAHL) I started in 1903 which was the first year of the World Series. I managed every game and of course controlled my beloved Red Sox. The Red Sox won the AL pennant and was out of first place for only about a week all season long. They did get a scare from the pitching tough led by Rube Wadell and his 411 strikeouts, a record that my stand for a while.

The Cubs took the NL pennant but almost blew it in true Cubs form. The Cubs had a 14 game lead at one point in the season but had to fend off the hard charging and favored Pirates. Pirates superstar Honus Wagner missed 38 games in the middle of the season when the Cubs pulled away, however when Wagner came back he led the Pirates to within a game of the pennant. Wagner led all of baseball with a .394 batting average.

The first World Series ever pitted the Cubs vs Red Sox. The Red Sox won game 1, but it was a bittersweet victory. In the 4th inning, Red Sox ace Cy Young felt discomfort in his pitching elbow, he gutted it out and went three more innings, leaving George Winter to complete the shutout and the win. However, the elbow problem that Young had would not ever fully recover. Red Sox manager was forced to move aroound his rotation. Young would try to gut it out in Game 6 but he just wasnt the same. The Cubs would win in Game 6, after pounding The AL Rookie of the Year, Norwood Gibson in Game 5.

The offseason has seen some changes. The Red Sox got a taste of it and went out and signed free agent Topsy Hartsel to add more punch to their offense which put so much pressure on their talented pitching staff. Hartsel was the key to the A's second place finish and many feel he was robbed of the 1903 MVP award. Hartsel hit .308 11 HR 81 RBI. The Red Sox also traded for Cubs second baseman Johnny Evers who broke spring traing with the Cubs on the bench. Evers was acquired for a young pitching prospect Nick Altrock. The Cubs also lost first baseman Frank Chance to free agency and the cross town White Sox. Leaving Joe Tinker as the only one left from the famed Tinker to Evers to Chance double play combination.

1903 also saw some unknowns put up some huge numbers. With fictional players being created to fill the minor leagues, great stories arose. Like for the Boston Braves who had a 27 year old journeyman by the name of Stanley Bear. Bear played one game in AAA hitting two homers, that was enough for the big club to realize they needed him. While the Braves had an awful season, Bear put up huge numbers hitting 44 homers. He only hit .219 and struck out 155 times. He is the type of player that nobody has seen the likes of yet. A guy who swings for the fences every time up. he has become a fan favorite, although old school managers resent his style. While fictional players were created for the minor leagues, past stars who retired prior to 1903 were also imported at the age they broke into the majors. Great pitchers like Tim Keefe and Kid Nicholls.
