Re: CD pre-orders...

I knew when I did it that jumping into the pool for a new version--prior to the discovery of whatever bugs may be--was a violation of long-standing common sense experience with any new software.

But I did it anyhow.

Now, in a bitter refrain Ive heard all my life, I can hear myself saying "Now look what you've gotten us into with your insatiable lust!" Or words to that effect.

Which leads me to the core question here: Which version of OOTP6 am I to expect? The one now out or the one that will be patched to quell the squawks about fonts, interface layout, and just what in the hell do the new ratings equate to? Or am I misconfused about the CD process entirely? Does it ( the CD ) merely contain some set-up code and not the actual game itself? And will I then have to find my way through download hell to finally play with my new toy?

This may not be any kind of deal to you young whippersnappers, but it is Deal Muy Grande to an old fart--a computer-illiterate old fart at that--such as myself. Number one, my net access is through a cranky server at work or a cranky wife at home, which limits--nay, ******s--lengthy d/l sessions. Number two, my personal history of software installs/downloads/diddling with Windows is positively littered with failures/crashes/hard-drive mass destruction. Number three, I gotta go buy a new computer anyway and am in a panic over screwing THAT up by not purchasing the right stuff for my baseball jones, so my anxiety is a wee bit elevated in any case.

Bottom line: I'd just as soon wait a bit for the game if a patch is , uh, imminent. And secondly, any clarification of the muddle would be greatly appreciated. And what the hell: any advice on the components/type of computer would be welcome too. I plan on spending $1500-2000, and am leaning toward a laptop, though a desktop is probably more cost-effective.

Thanks in advance, and sorry for the length of the post; I feel better now.

Well, bump. All I'm looking for are some answers. And while Im at it, any feedback on the historical side? Are era-appropriate players truly created for non-modern fans? How are the stats looking coming from the new engine?

You can get a great lap top that will run this game fine for anywhere from 1000 to 1500, depending on your other needs you may want more computer. I'd advise against a desktop, but that is just my .02 cents

If you already pre-ordered it, It's probably on its way, so you'll get the release version, with the bugs.

The cd you'll receive will have the ootp6setup.exe on it(I'm assuming, I just downloaded it) which will contain all the install files to run the game, so you won't have to download anything if your happy with the game as is.

To get the patch to update the game and fix whatever Markus plans on fixing you'll have to do some downloading. The patches are usually around 5-10 megs which shouldn't take that long, and then you just run the patch and it will update the game.

Hopefully that helps, I can get more specific if you need me to but I figure that should do.

I play modern era so I can't tell you much about the historical side, but I'm very happy with the statistical output and although I'm looking forward to the patch, I'm sure I could survive with the game in it's current state for another year. None of the problems others have mentioned are too rough for me, and I've certainly kept around, and enjoyed buggier games than this.

Thanks for the replies, guys.

Im sure looking forward to a side-by-side comparison between the two engines in terms of the realistic stat generation, or to compare and contrast the effects of the two.
