Continuing Trucated Careers
Ok, for all you OOTP professionals out there.
I have a question about replaying the careers of players who's career was cut short or interupted for some reason, Joe Jackson and Bob Feller for example. Is it possible to replay the portions of these players careers with the imported historical data, but then continue their careers for a "what if" kind of senario. What kind of continued career would Joe Jackson have had if he'd not been banned from baseball? What would Bob Feller's or Ted Williams for that matter, career numbers look like if their careers had not been interupted by military service? I've been looking at OOTP again as a baseball simulation that I'd like to get into and what I've read about it on the website it sounds like it might enable me to carry out the kind of historical replay I'd like to do. Just wondering if anyone could tell me more about it to answer my questions about the historical replay. Also, reading through the forums here, it sounds like OOTP 6 is not too far off in the future. From what everyone knows, would you all recommend I wait the little longer on version 6? Thanks much, Rocco Del Sesto |

Yes you can play "what if" type senarios, as far as waiting that is up to you.

OOTP6 should be out really soon, so if you're inclined to wait, do. You can do what-if historical replays in OOTP, but you should know that players may not develop (probably won't, in fact) the same way they did in real life. Ty Cobb might become a .280 career hitter or Babe Ruth may never break the 10-home run mark, depending on luck (though these would be very improbable things). Also, a big named player might go down with a career ending injury in his rookie year. It truly is a what-if kind of game.

If you're interested in the what-ifs that could happen replaying baseball, OOTP is excellent at that. You will see some guys end up with extremly similar stats that they put up in real life (although, perhaps thru different means on a different team). You will see HOFers fizzle at times...and unknowns becoming legends...and its never exactly the same. It doesn't try to recreate the exact results based on team or season disks like some other baseball sims, so if you want exact results or predictable results than perhaps another baseball sim is better. But in the end...the careers generally resemble what actually happen with a pleasing amount of variance, at least IMO.
As far as OOTP6...normally I would say don't wait...but OOTP6 is right around the corner....if you're bored..and really don't care about 20 bucks...go ahead and get it...but I would say you're close enough to the release of OOTP6 you may as well wait.... |

Thanks everybody for your comments. I really appreciate it. I play a lot of APBA BBW in draft leagues and doing some replay stuff with that. That game though is more toward trying to recreate actual stats and results. OOTP does sound from what you all describe what I'm interesting in for the "what if" kind of thing with the interesting unexpected turns.
From what I've read and what you say, I think it sounds like version 6 will be worth the little wait. Besides, I'm not extremely bored right now I purchased Title Bout Championship Boxing and I'm having a blast with that! I keep thinking OOTP though would give me along with my BBW a nice balance of "projects" so I'd not get burned out doing too much of one thing. Thanks again guys for your comments! Rocco |

FYI, version 6 is probably atleast a month or longer away(conservatively speaking)....so it is still going to be awhile.

Thank you Steve. As I mentioned I'm enjoying TBCB taking up a lot of my "free time" right now, so I'll look forward to OOTP I think to help warm up my summer!
Thanks much! Rocco |

The solo league I'm playing out right now is approaching 1925, and Shoeless Joe is going strong- I even tried to trade for him last year to join my Red Sox-moved-to-Pittsfield club. Alas, it was a no-go. It's too bad- I'll bet he would have gotten quite a boost playing in Wahconah Park.
