Crashing to desktop after names file change

Tired of the silly names given to rookies in my solo league I updated the names and fnames files. I added some more contemporary names and adjusted the frequency of formal names vs nicknames (less "Christopher" & more "Chris" for example). I thought I followed the instruction I found on this web site but now OOTP crashes to the desktop when I move to the offseason. Upon reload, OOTP has prgressed to the next season without amateurs, free agents, or spring training. I am 99% sure the reason is because I did something wrong with these name files.

After updating the files in notepad, I saved them with a .dat extension and then marked them as "read only". Is there something else I might have missed? Thanks for your continued help on this board, OOTP vets!

Save them as archived not read only.

Hmm, I appreciate the help but I don't know what that means. I looked for "archive" option but do not see it. I thought I read specifically to make them as "read only" which I did under the properties menu. I am still clueless on this.

When you look at the "properties" of each "archive" should be one of the options. Make sure that box is checked.
