STB 2k3 historical leagues

Hi all---I have a brand new copy of STB 2k3 and it's great, but I cannot get the game to create
an historical league. I've downloaded Lahman, and gone through all the steps, but a few seconds
beginning to import the players (after maybe fifteen or so players) I get dumped to the desktop. The
league then shows up in the "Open League" file, but no players, finances, etc. How do I overcome this?
Is STB 2k3 somehow different in this regard than ootp4? I've done all the steps from the FAQ, but
it just can't get off the ground...
