? about trade settings
This is my first career league I'm running, and I just changed the trade setting to "difficult" (I think that's it; one harder than normal in any case). It seems that I was being offered way too much under normal settings. Is there a consensus out there as to which setting is "best" or most natural? Should I be weighting it toward vets or prospects?

Personally, I prefer "Plunder" mode.

I use the normal setting and have only once accepted a computer initiated trade. They mostly send me garbage. As for the trade I have pulled, the computer only accepts trades that are fair. I have traded older players for younger players with better ratings, but these players are always in their contract seasons, and will cost me more $ if I resign them.

I like to bump up the difficulty one level like you did and bump up one level towards favor prospects. This seems natural. I do have to be carefull not to take advantage of the AI sometimes though. But I suspect that's always the case, no matter what the settings. Sometimes I'll kick in another decent prospect with a trade, because I feel too guilty taking a trade the computer was ok with.

Don't feel guilty. The AI Cheating Comeback code will get you in the postseason.

I think this is true. I finally won the WS in a "new" game after almost a decade of having the best or second best record in the majors. I could hear the immaginary fans bringing up comparisons to the Braves.

I set trades at "normal" and "favor veterans." In 3+ seasons in my solo league I have yet to accept a computer initiated trade. Like others have said, the CPU AI usually offers me only junk, or deals that make no sense to me.
I don't think the "normal" setting is unfair, unless you do a lot of trading. In moderation (following my own house rules which means no more than a handful of trades each season), "normal" and "favor veterans" seems to work fine for me. On the other hand, if I dominated other teams on a regular basis (which I don't), I'd raise the trading difficulty level to level the playing field a little. I hope that day will come!

i use difficult with heavily favor prospects. Seems to work out well, or atleast it keeps me from trading away a fading 3.5 star for the #1 pick each year.

Favoring prospects is usually a better idea. The prospects in this game develop better than in real life. And the prospect pool is often smaller than in real life, especially with low draft round settings.
Think about it this way: if you read all those posts about how to construct a team that wins over 100 games every year before the trading options were implemented, it's ALWAYS about how to trade over 30-year-old stars for prospects. Setting the AI to favor prospects is surely a good idea to hinder that powerful strategy.
