Re-iteration: Re-signing
This "make me an offer" stuff has got to go.
A player should always give a figure if asked. What professional athlete doesn't use the media to negotiate by asking, or go in with a number in mind.? They should say "I don't want to play for you," ask for an exact contract which leaves room to exchange money for years and so on, or do something that gives us an indication of what they want. I'm not saying you should be able to re-sign everybody...players should ask for a ridiculous contract if they don't really want to play for you or if they want to test the market. So frustrating to be a team with the best record in the league...and no idea how to negotiate re-signings with some of these guys. |

When it comes to negotiating in the media...
Maybe in the contract box a player could be more clear...not "I want to test the market." Some could say "I will test the market," meaning they won't sign with anybody right now...or some could say "I'd re-sign if you were winning," meaning if the player was traded to a top team that they then may re-sign. |
