Marginal Payroll/Marginal Win 2003

Numbers from baseballprospectus.com by Doug Pappas.

(It's in a subscriber only article, I only took the final numbers. Actually anyone with the formula could calculate it by themselves.)

Marginal wins = ((winning percentage - .300) x 162)
Marginal payroll = (opening day payroll - (28 x $300,000))

Team Marginal Payroll/Marginal Win
TB 779,861
OAK 885,250
KC 933,663
FLA 942,649

How many dollars each team spent per win for each above the bare minimum (.300 winning percentage).

Tampa Bay's number is really really impressive considering 2/3 of their payroll went to Ben Grieve and Rey Ordonez!! The #1 bargain team!

Argh, I copied it wrong. Fixed it. It's minus 0.300 not times 0.300.

Doug Pappas' assumption is a replacement-level club would be able to play .300 ball. Therefore the win numbers below that would be considered given. The 300,000 number is just the league minimum salary. 28 is 25 active roster plus 3 on the DL.

Apparently the Tigers are below the replacement-level as a team, with only Dmitri Young significantly above the level.

Not detered by the lack of interest in this thread, I did some calculations for 1999~2003 as in the attached file.

For the last five years, the number looked like this:

Oakland and Minnesota are two well known cases, but Florida and the White Sox are very consistently good also.

That is not true. I tried to replace those three by Wakefield, Lowe, and Burkett this year. The win share differences is 58-32=26. That would be roughly 9 wins.

Taking 9 wins off the Oakland's marginal win number of 47.466, you'll still have 38.466. That in turn would result in a marginal payroll/marginal win of about 1091k. 1091k is still good for 4th place!!!

So even if you give the A's no credit for the big 3, you still can't deny them as one of the most well run team in the league!
