Marginal Payroll/Marginal Win 2003
Numbers from baseballprospectus.com by Doug Pappas.
(It's in a subscriber only article, I only took the final numbers. Actually anyone with the formula could calculate it by themselves.) Marginal wins = ((winning percentage - .300) x 162) Marginal payroll = (opening day payroll - (28 x $300,000)) Team Marginal Payroll/Marginal Win TB 779,861 OAK 885,250 KC 933,663 FLA 942,649 CWS 1,139,305 MIN 1,140,217 TOR 1,146,497 MON 1,265,959 SF 1,421,580 HOU 1,616,923 MIL 1,661,186 PHI 1,667,914 PIT 1,747,807 SEA 1,774,426 CHC 1,836,125 ATL 1,836,302 BOS 1,901,545 ARI 2,041,172 STL 2,053,596 CLE 2,084,270 COL 2,306,365 CIN 2,381,362 SD 2,404,545 ANA 2,487,031 LA 2,678,506 NYY 2,696,775 BAL 2,725,548 TEX 4,291,360 NYM 6,090,342 DET Infinite

How many dollars each team spent per win for each above the bare minimum (.300 winning percentage).

Tampa Bay's number is really really impressive considering 2/3 of their payroll went to Ben Grieve and Rey Ordonez!! The #1 bargain team!

Doug Pappas' assumption is a replacement-level club would be able to play .300 ball. Therefore the win numbers below that would be considered given. The 300,000 number is just the league minimum salary. 28 is 25 active roster plus 3 on the DL. Apparently the Tigers are below the replacement-level as a team, with only Dmitri Young significantly above the level.

Not detered by the lack of interest in this thread, I did some calculations for 1999~2003 as in the attached file.
For the last five years, the number looked like this: 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 Total Bal 2404k 2872k 4343k 2821k 2731k 2907k Bos 1128k 1908k 2988k 2252k 1904k 1987k NYY 1551k 2164k 2129k 2134k 2701k 2141k TB 1252k 2601k 3462k 3818k 779k 2154k Tor 1018k 1102k 2145k 2335k 1146k 1504k CWS 601k 491k 1571k 1502k 1139k 1038k Cle 1232k 1627k 1969k 2772k 2080k 1815k Det 1230k 1637k 2390k 6856k infinite 2928k KC 964k 530k 1665k 2890k 935k 1186k Min 712k 398k 438k 692k 1138k 714k Ana 2031k 1290k 1445k 1058k 2491k 1555k Oak 386k 549k 475k 575k 884k 579k Sea 1365k 1190k 998k 1619k 1775k 1353k Tex 1434k 2791k 3275k 4154k 4300k 2895k Atl 1198k 1643k 2120k 1586k 1839k 1650k Fla 681k 377k 990k 1103k 942k 838k Mon 400k 1430k 1357k 881k 1268k 1066k NYM 1131k 1568k 2540k 3207k 6087k 2363k Phi 772k 2378k 889k 1553k 1667k 1360k CHC 2804k 3187k 1413k 3644k 1838k 2266k Cin 529k 1055k 2125k 1250k 2380k 1232k Hou 892k 1839k 1171k 1552k 1617k 1343k Mil 1273k 1149k 1784k 5621k 1658k 1757k Pit 463k 1006k 3295k 1425k 1747k 1393k StL 1387k 1145k 1552k 1356k 2051k 1480k Ari 1123k 1993k 1677k 1911k 2037k 1711k Col 2035k 1580k 2562k 1981k 2303k 2059k LA 2500k 2130k 2688k 1991k 2421k 2326k SD 1550k 1696k 983k 1905k 2406k 1602k SF 977k 936k 1325k 1488k 1422k 1240k Oakland and Minnesota are two well known cases, but Florida and the White Sox are very consistently good also.

Taking 9 wins off the Oakland's marginal win number of 47.466, you'll still have 38.466. That in turn would result in a marginal payroll/marginal win of about 1091k. 1091k is still good for 4th place!!! So even if you give the A's no credit for the big 3, you still can't deny them as one of the most well run team in the league!
