Proof that "intangibles" is real

This is for the doubters out there...

From the AP 8/10/03

Quote:
Recently acquired Robin Ventura and Rickey Henderson are a combined 17-for-74 with four home runs and seven RBIs. But manager Jim Tracy measures their value in more than statistics because of their combined 40 years of big league experience. "Rickey Henderson and Robin Ventura are very special people. They've been on winning clubs, and they are winners," Tracy said. "There's a difference in our clubhouse. And when you look around and ask yourself what's so different, I think you have to point to Robin Ventura and what he's brought to this clubhouse. ... I can't tell you how impressed I've been with Rickey -- his professionalism, how much he loves the game, how much time he spends with some of our younger players."
Unless you think Jim Tracy is full of crap, this is proof that there are things you just can not measure in statistics! This stuff does not show up in the box score! The Dodgers have a 12-13 record since signing Henderson. Do you think they'd have that sort of success without him? No way. Henderson and Ventura are special people!

After hearing that they Ventura and Henderson are special people, I have no doubt they can win the WS. They should sign Chuck Finley. Sure they don't need a pitcher, but think of how many winners they would have in the clubhouse.

By the way, shouldn't the thread title be, "Proof that 'intangibles' are real?"

Here's the Dodgers latest hot catching prospect, and he even looks a lot like Mike Piazza!

Funny story, actually. In 7th and 8th grade, my english teacher sucked. The hardest teacher I ahev ever had. She had a thing called "double whammy." In that case, if you got one wrong, you would get one off for not having the right answer, and one off for having the wrong answer. That was the only time that I ever got a -% on a paper. I got 52 wrong out a possible 50 points.

In 9th grade, our ebglish teacher was incredibly easy. We read some books, did a little vocab, anbd that was it. In 10th grade, our english teacher was also the speech teacher, meaning that we did no grammar, just speech stuff. So really, I have not learned any grammar since the 8th grade, and it is a refreshing break.

I can see this argument distinctly from both sides.

First of all, the word 'intangibles' is plural, necessitating the proper agreement of the infinitive 'to be', which would be 'are' in this instance, as our studious little North Dakotan pointed out. twins15 is in rare form and is clearly jonesing to get back to junior high school, which should occur at schools across the nation in the upcoming days and weeks.

However...

What Legend was referring to is not the actual word 'intangibles.' I don't think any of us will argue whether intangibles physically exist. What the experienced Mr. Fite is referring to is the 'idea' of intangibles that has been so vigorously debated at this very forum in recent weeks. I refer you to my avater, one Mr. Doug Glanville, who embodies the essence of the 'intangibles' argument that can get normally docile people quite worked up. So if you replace the word 'intangibles' in the title with the word 'idea', then the subject and verb are in perfect agreement.

Therefore, the Legend's thread title can be seen as both correct or incorrect depending on whether the subject is construed as 'intangibles' - plural or 'the idea of intangibles' - singular.

PS
To Rich, you can obviously see the error in you're post as well. It should read 'Your wrong Scott'.

FWIW, studious is in no way synonymous with its apparent root word, ie 'stud'. Sorry for disappointing you.

Roffle, every time I see those pearly whites grinning out at me

Unfortunately, I didn't get the joke until I'd hit "post" and was too lazy to edit.

Twins, tank you for calling me sad
