Soon to be new...

Hello all,
I'm falling off the and will probably buy ootp5 any day now. I enjoyed the demo when I could play it, it crashed a bunch. Can't fix it since the demo ran out, so I guess I have to buy it to see if I can run it stably, stabely,... (is that a word?) Just a quick question:

If I buy it and start a new season, will there be HOF'ers already? Will they have actual HoF numbers? Will there also be all time records? For seasons, games, rookies, etc... I know there is no MLB license, but will someone's names be there? OR do I have to d/l a historical 'pack' to fill my HoF and other various record databases.

That's all for now. See you on the Dynasty board soon

Wagon?
Face of the Earth?
Log?

I do believe that you have to download records and HOFers, as you suspected. It shouldn't be too difficult though.

Download the latest totalminors set at www.rosterdevelopmentgroup.com to get the best MLB rosters out there, although you will still likely have to make some adjustments to individual players.

Try fictional. You may never go back to "real" major league rosters again.

Wow, you guys are quick. Thanks.

Sorry sixto, 3 strikes. I meant to put 'fence' in there. Apparently, the way most folks seem addicted to this game, I just may be falling off a wagon, into a bottomless pit of stats and simulation...

With the element of chance and randomness in the game, starting a league using "real" major leaguers can simulate fictional in many regards but with familiar names. Plus the ability to "relive" or redo any aspect of baseball history in any form is great too.

I'm in three "real" online leagues and two fictional online leagues. I sometimes get my fictional players names confused between the two leagues.

That is what is great about the game, you can customize and choose what you want to your hearts content.

In regards to Fictional vs. Real, I always start out with "real" rosters, such as GForce's TotalMinors set, and then switch to "fictional" automatically once all the players have retired and the new generated crop of rookies takes over.

For me personally, it's easier to do this because I find it easier to keep track of who the players are at first while I'm getting used to my league, and slowly over time, fictional players are filtered in at a pace I can keep up with. I find that easier than having to acquaint myself with a whole league full of ficitional guys all at once. But that's just me.

Falcon, I like your style. But when do you switch to fictional players? Are fictional rookie players generated every year therefore getting rid of real players through attrition?

Yeah, for instance if you use GForce's TotalMinors roster set, they'll have all of the current 2003 rookies and players, plus some guys in the minors that haven't been called up yet.

But once you finish this season (2003), and enter the 2004 season, you'll go through a draft in which "fictional" players are generated.

edit: To expand on this, what this means is although "real" players will still make up the vast majority of the regulars, eventually through years of drafts of "fictional" players, the real guys will be filtered out through age/retirement, and the fictional guys will take over.

Keep in mind that with guys as young as Prior and Soriano around for another 15 to 20 seasons, it won't be until about 2020 before you see your entire league filled with ficitional guys. But at the same time, in about 5 seasons you'll start to see fictional guys performing like stars.

Falcon doesnt really "switch" to fictional, his league just becomes fictional once all of the real major league players have retired.

After every season, the CPU will generate a new crop of fictional rookies to be brought into the league via an Ammy draft.

Welcome, Wig.

Looks like you'll enjoy real or historical play. However, if you ever want to go fictional you'll find it a blast, too. Feel free to visit my solo Metro Leagues site for some fictional inspiration, when you get a chance. (Link is in my signature) Cheers.

I agree with Falcon. I'm selecting abt 2100 individual seasons (keep eyes peeled on the dynasty section for detais soon) from the last century for the same reasons. I don't expect the same career curve, but the familiar names will make it easier to keep track of. In OOTP3 I did a totally fictional league and just had problems getting interested in how "other" teams were doing.

I'll share a recent idea - tho' there are better threads and ideas than mine. I've been a user since v2 and I have tried just about everything...

Most recently I made an "Alternate" league that I started in 1903 with real players... kept half the "founding teams" and added a a few teams taht never existed (Charleston, SC - Galveston, TX, et al.) I then divided the teams into, basically, the "North" and "South". I dumped all players, re-calc'ed for historical accuracy and drafted an all new league. Erased career stats (that are imported) and named the various award trophies generically (to be renemaed after 50 or so years after the *best* players).

I played as Brooklyn (tho' I simmed most of the season). Honus Wagner was my #1 pick and won the MVP (.327/5/88/44 SB). Great to see those numbers win MVP... and all my pitchers threw 300+ innings and *all* of my relievers had a total of 19 IP and 0 saves. It was a blast to see!

This is only one of about 8-10 different ideas that I had when I retired my 200 year+ fictional league. The re-play value of the game is awesome and I would have to agree that fictional is most addictive - tho' I am having a rolling good time with my alter-league.
