Turn Player into a Coach

I need some help with turning retired players into coaches. I am in commissioner mode and turned a few former players into coaches, but I've tried several others, and the option is not available. Can anyone help? Why is the option available for some former players but not all?

There is something wrong with doing it to DeRosa. There was a thread on this somewhere. He is or the game thinks he is already a coach and so won't let you do it twice. He coached the WBC. Maybe he is the American WBC coach in OOTP 24 but if you turn off the WBC, it hides him. I couldn't figure it out when it first came up.

I checked my settings and couldn't find WBC anywhere. I also searched again for DeRosa, but he's not showing up as a coach. Did you ever find a solution to this error when you came across it?

Hmmmm. Never did solve it but let’s take a stab at it. Try importing him as a player (so not going to the already retired guy) and retry - and if that new version won’t become one, try cloning that imported version as a work around. If the import is too young (assuming this works) obviously edit his year of birth.

That worked - DeRo has been imported, retired, and turned into a coach. Thank you! I've been playing OOTP for the last 10 years and didn't know I could import players like that. Great tip! Thanks again!

was the player retired? as i recall (faintly) that was a necessary step at one time.

The bug was that the original retired DeRosa was retired and already made a coach - but that coach incarnation is impossible to find (something about his role in the WBC that didn't load). So, when you go to his retired self, you can't make him into a coach a second time. So, the end-run it seems is to create a second version of him and then turn that one into a coach.

You nailed it LansdowneSt - something on the backend is hiding his 'active' status as a coach in the game. I found the same error with Brian McCann. Both times, I was able to import the historical player and then retire that version, to create a coach.

Slightly different issue, along the same topic. I converted a former player (Lawrence Butler -- I'm in the 2034 season) into a coach. Game confirms he's a coach and available on the personnel screen. Except that he isn't. I can find his player profile, which no longer allows him to be converted to a coach (which tracks), but can't find him on the list of ALL coaches (which makes no sense).
