New acquisition dragging team down?
On May 5, 2035, the St. Louis Cardinals 25-year-old minor league catcher R.J. Long from the Tampa Bay Rays.
Long had never played in the majors, although his ratings seemed to indicate he was ready. He made his MLB debut with the Cardinals on May 9, and while he initially performed at the plate the overall results were quite different. Being used as the starting catcher against left-handed pitchers, the team has gone 4-17 in game's he has played. The team was 17-17 at the time of his debut. So, in the game's he has not caught, the Cardinals have gone 19-12. They are currently 40-46 overall and 10 games out of first on July 5. There is nothing in his resume to indicate he is a clubhouse problem. Nor is he mentioned in team chemistry. However, the team's ERA for the season is 3.58. When Long is catching it is 4.28. I think it is time to send Long down and give another catcher a shot. |

My opinion as you asked.
The only way he would make my roster would be as an emergency call up for injury replacement. Being moved back down as soon as possible when almost anyone else is available. Very little MLB talent there. Check the free agent list, you will probably find better. |

If by MLB ready, we mean R.J. Long is a backup who plays once a week, typically on Sundays, then yes MLB ready. Or he could platoon vs Lefties depending on how J.D. Gonzalez looks.
Let him develop another year to hopefully that Power potential, the 20-30 HR will be worth whatever other woes he brings. Also, 20 games isnt a great sample size to label him as a detriment to the team and pitchers. |

Imagine how much negative WAR would this guy have to create to turn a 19-12 team into a 4-17 team? Check your scoring in the games he plays.

1. He has an OPS+ of 124.
2. He is "in the green" on all three RV metrics. 3. He is drawing a lot of walks and not striking out much considering the power profile. 4. His strong defense is helping to put him on a pace for nearly 2 WAR as a backup catcher. I would keep playing him unless you can draw a direct correlation to the team's poor record when he is in the game. Nothing in his stats points to a problem. |

Absolutely. It's preposterous that a single player could be the difference between a .613 winning percentage and a .190 winning percentage. The idea he is the cause should have been rejected based on the original W-L data. You've now provided solid proof. |
