It's Out There

105 Chipper Jones Variant on auction for a starting bid of 1,999,999 points. Pulled this for one of my almost-forgotten teams that's currently clobbering the competition but is only in High Silver this week. He'd be a great addition, but I've learned that the "one great player" will always disappoint when surrounded by not-great teammates.

This is whale bait and an ultimate end-game card. You won't find a better third baseman for the waning weeks of PT26.

Awesome! Now all I need is to figure out how to get 1,990,000 points!

(There are people with 2m points to spend? That they haven't already spent on things they need? How... HOW?)

i know multiple people with 8 digits worth of points at this point. it's not that hard if you're thrifty with your stuff and you have very good tournament teams.

however, starting this card at this price is not the way to do it. this card should be started probably at the minimum, or at least much lower than your expected price ot actually get folks to bid.

Only true if I'm willing to sell it for significantly less than 2 mil, which I wasn't. As things have played out, it looks like I hit a sweet spot at the wrong time. Three other like cards on auction, one of which looks to go for a million plus (not enough), one with a current bid of 500K (ridiculously low if it holds), the third at 1.5 million with no bidders.

In any case, I pulled it back, boosted it, parked it in the four slot, completed the Pew Pew mission, drew a Torriente and a Gibson in the packs, then rolled through a dozen top missions to acquire Dihigo, Cabrera, Trout, Donaldson, Mathewson, and Guidry (another Perfect Pack pull).

Happy happy. Chipper has a solid team around him as they head back to Gold tomorrow.

Fair enough! yes, you hit it right when other people were doing variant spotties and flooded the market. But if you were willing to actually play it and weren't intending on selling it except for a big price, tehen yes, what you were doing as such.

But if you wanted to actually sell it, starting low is the way to do so.

I see two hours left for Chipper variant 5 starting at 1,500,000, but no bids.

Yes, starting with a relatively low price is the way to go for routine cards like, say, a Bronze Cy Young variant. Lose it to a low-ball bid because there's competition or lack of interest right now and you're shorted a few thousand points. Shrug it off. With cards like this, you're shorted a million or more points if it sells for the starting bid of 500K. Yikes.

completely disagree: if a card is something people want, you will get bidders. when you get screwed is if you post something like a mike trout variant (something I opened) which is a card with no real home right now, so nobody wants it, and if you post it low you might not get any bidders. but for a top level competitive card, people will pay the price that it will go for, and starting it low gets more people engaged early.

A few days ago, I was watching 104 Nathan variant sitting at sub 150K with 20 seconds left. It sold for about 475K as 9 more bids crashed my hopes for a steal.

Mine is on track for 2 WAR in High Gold. Not terrible, and still a small sample size. Also added Babe Adams. Stearnes, and Walcott to the roster, so the team is competitive if not awe-inspiring at this level. Second place at this point.
