Scheduling Confusion

Something I don't understand going on in a save I recently started: fictional-historical, beginning in 1871. There is supposed to be a 32-game schedule, generated in pre-season.

Current standings, and the magic # there tracks with a 32-game schedule. There should be 10-11 games each to play. But ... there's not. Current game date is July 23rd. It says the regular season ends on the 27th.

4-5 games left per team, so that it looks like all will end with 26 games played, not 32. I've checked the schedule for every team. There are no games scheduled after July 27th. August is empty. September is empty. Etc.

What is going on here? Is there anything I can do to prevent it from happening again/fix it in this case? Biggest concern is, what needs to happen for me to be able to rely on actually having the number of games scheduled that I have entered and requested to be generated in future seasons?

Thank you. Seems like the solution then may be for me to always make sure I have an even number of teams.
