What data/information is used to determine the overall rating of a player?

for newly released cards? paul's choice. for live cards? an algorithm

I've often wondered why the OVR isn't a fixed calculation and public knowledge. The intentional "misinformation" to complicate things is only valuable to the folks willing to spend endless hours trying to determine "real value" and miss-values cards anyways. The game has enough "fog of war" elements in it without purposely misguiding OOTP players with arbitrary OVRs.

because if it was a fixed calculation then creep wouldn't exist, and that makes a boring game. it also is worth pushing cards to overalls that are better than expected for cap reasons too. it just makes a more dynamic game.

No, and Yes.

Creep would still exist. Creep is the result of individual ratings going upwards of 150. OVR would simply be a more accurate picture of the "strength" of the card instead of an arbitrary guess.

As far a dynamic versus boring; maybe. It depends heavily on whether OOTP players are more baseball fans or mathematicians. Baseball fans would never find the game boring, spreadsheet masters might.

I'm not so sure about normal PT play though. Watched 3 minutes of the perfect league finals on twitch until I noticed both teams had all the same players except (maybe?) one. Exciting. Same as I remember in the upper leagues in 2023. If people can easily identify superior cards (and some easily obtain them) might as well just use a fixed calculation. Having a fixed calculation would possibly make it easier to balance cards with different profiles during creation so that there would be more variety in choices at the upper levels. But I'm just a simple man and that's my own humble opinion.

Probably biased because my team drew a 100 level Hack Wilson early on... What a let down. Dude was so useless over 3 seasons he ended up riding the bench behind my diamond, gold and even a few silver cards before finally deemed worthless and sold. If it wasn't for a mission he'd probably have to be quick sold for 20k.

I agree, there seems to be no rhyme or reason to the ratings. I have 4 players in the 90's, Jim Palmer, Jack Mcdowell, Jim Perry & Champ Summers and they all suck regardless of how many times I put them in line ups. Happens with a lot of Gold ratings also. Very irritating and annoying. So much so that I am close to just not playing PT anymore.
