What NHL took seven, WHA teams instead of four that happen in our timeline.

In a groundbreaking move that will reshape professional hockey, the National Hockey League (NHL) has officially welcomed seven former World Hockey Association (WHA) teams into its ranks. This merger, finalized after months of negotiations, sees the Hartford Whalers, Quebec Nordiques, Edmonton Oilers, and Winnipeg Jets, Cincinnati Stingers, Birmingham Bulls, and Houston Aeros join NHL in a historic expansion.

The NHL-WHA "merger" had been long discussed, with NHL owners initially hesitant to welcome the rival league’s franchises. However, economic pressures and the undeniable talent pool in the WHA forced the NHL to reconsider. After years of negotiations, the deal was finally struck, allowing seven teams to join the NHL under strict conditions.

Much like the agreement made in the original four-team deal, these new franchises were required to pay a $6 million expansion fee. Additionally, WHA clubs were only permitted to retain up to four players from their previous rosters before entering the expansion draft, ensuring a level playing field as they integrated into the NHL.

1986-87 NHL Season Recap

**Reactions to Wayne Gretzky Signing with the Minnesota North Stars**
The biggest bombshell of the NHL offseason was Wayne Gretzky joining the Minnesota North Stars. Here’s how the hockey world reacted:

- **Minnesota Fans:** Absolute euphoria. The North Stars were already a strong team, finishing second in the Norris Division with 101 points. With Gretzky, they now had the best player in the world. The State of Hockey buzzed with excitement, with fans believing this could be their ticket to their first Stanley Cup.
- **Detroit Red Wings:** The defending champions suddenly had their biggest divisional rival add the most dominant player in the game. The Red Wings still had an elite team, but this made their Norris Division battles even more intense.
- **Edmonton Oilers Fans:** Heartbreak. Although the Oilers had already been struggling, losing Gretzky eliminated any hope of a quick turnaround. Their future now looked bleak.
- **NHL Analysts:** Many saw Minnesota as instant Cup contenders, and Gretzky didn't disappoint. He won the Hart Trophy, Art Ross, and Ted Lindsay Award while leading the North Stars to a strong season and a deep playoff run.
- **Other Norris Division Teams:** Pure dread. Facing Detroit was already tough, but now every team had to deal with Gretzky in the same division. Teams like Birmingham and Chicago had no answer for him.

---

**Hardest and Easiest Divisions Recap**

**Hardest Division: Norris Division**
- Detroit (110 points), Minnesota (101 points), and Birmingham (96 points) made this the toughest division to compete in.
- Chicago barely squeezed into the playoffs with 74 points, but even they had to fight hard for that spot.
- The top three teams were all legitimate contenders, and having Gretzky in the mix made it even tougher.

**Easiest Division: Patrick Division**
- While Pittsburgh (93 points) was strong, the competition wasn’t as fierce.
- Philadelphia (88 points), NY Islanders (86 points), and Cincinnati (76 points) made the playoffs, but none of them looked like true Cup threats.
- The Rangers (65 points) and Devils (42 points) were both completely outmatched.
- The division winner, Pittsburgh, had the fewest points of any regular-season division winner, showing how weak the Patrick was compared to the others.

Stanley Cup Champions: Detroit Red Wings 🏆
The Red Wings proved their dominance yet again, defeating the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Stanley Cup Finals to secure another championship. Steve Yzerman, who played a pivotal role throughout the playoffs, was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as the postseason MVP.

Playoff Summary

Gordie Howe Becomes NHL Commissioner
In a historic move, the NHL named Gordie Howe as its new commissioner in early 1994, following his instrumental role in resolving the league’s labor dispute. Despite the shortened 48-game season, Howe’s leadership helped salvage the season, ensuring a smooth return to play. As commissioner, Howe has focused on growing the game, maintaining labor peace, and expanding the league’s presence in non-traditional markets. His appointment was met with widespread approval from players, owners, and fans alike, given his legendary status and deep understanding of the game

Looks great, but...

...whenever I do these alternate WHA merger thingies, I always re-align the NHL and get rid of those stupid division names:

WESTERN: Vanc, LA, Colo, Edm, Winn, Hou
CENTRAL: Minn, Det, Chi, Cinc, StL, Birm
NORTHEAST: Tor, Que, Mon, Buff, Bos, Hart
ATLANTIC: Pitt, Atl, NYI, NYR, Phil, Wash

I take the Rockies never move to NJ, nor the Flames to Calgary...?
