Your GM Tenure
When playing in GM-mode, how many years do you usually stay with a team, before either taking a new job or beginning a new save?

A friend of mine with the game gave me a version of his long-term save and we've since been competing against each other to win a WS with all 36 (30 MLB + 6 expansion) franchises. I've taken a job with a new franchise that has a GM opening (whether by the old one being fired, retired, or not having a contract renewed) and for which I haven't won a World Series, unless none of the teams for which I haven't won has that natural vacancy. In such a case, I'll just take a job with a team not on my list.
All of which is to say, that varies. I've won a World Series in a single season with a new franchise twice, whether by inheriting a generous situation at the outset or by sheer luck of an efficient successful teardown and rebuild. I had one case where I was stuck with a franchise for 27 seasons because I lost eight World Series with them before winning on the ninth appearance. There's been a lot in between, too. It's been fun, and I've accrued over 130 seasons now over the last couple of IRL years/OOTP versions. I've got 11 teams left, in case you were wondering ![]() All of which is to say, YMMV, but I normally don't get engrossed in one file so easily. When I had previously made saves, I'd stick with a team until I got fired or bored, deleted the file, and made a new one. This experience has helped me value the lore factor of keeping a save going for so long, so I imagine if I continue playing it after going 36/36, I'll either continue a similar pattern — maybe winning twice over with each franchise? — or just sticking with one until getting fired, bored, etc. So far, I haven't gotten fired, but you never know if or when that could happen, right? Making a challenge of sorts within the file itself is what helped me feel ready to move on to new teams, with self-imposed house rules as needed. If you don't want to switch teams, I think an alternative could be clicking the "cannot be fired" button but simming, say, 10+ years into the future and letting the AI handle everything before picking up with the same team and seeing where things now stand. Or you could do the same by quitting and simming a given amount into the future before choosing your next adventure. The customization is what makes OOTP so great. |

That sounds fun; trying to win a WS with each team. I've been usually playing 5-10 years with each sim, as I figured that was the usual life span with a GM. I was curious as to how long other people stay with a team, before moving on.
I usually do what you suggested and sim a decade into the future after I retire, to see how my farm system played out. |
