Any reason why some retired players can't be turned into coaches?
I love the "turn into coach" feature and try to sprinkle in some organizational legends into the coaching ranks whenever I take over a new team. With this year's version, I'm noticing a few former players who can't be turned into coaches, though.
In my game, the following is a partial list of former players who cannot be turned into coaches: - Ken Griffey, Jr - Vladimir Guerrero, Sr - Adam Dunn - Torii Hunter - Darryl Strawberry - Michael Jordan Does anyone with more familiarity of the inner workings of OOTP know why a small handful of players can't become coaches? I've read some speculate that personality is hardcoded into player profiles so that some can't become coaches, but I'm not sure why this particular set of players would receive that designation while some more prickly personalities can be turned into coaches. A small thing in the grand scheme, but it was a slight damper to realize I couldn't get Griffey and Dunn to be the manager and bench coach of my Reds GM save. |

So this is just my opinion obviously, but why would you want the ability to turn every single former player into a coach? To each his own, obviously. But having every single former player in the history of baseball be a candidate to become a coach in your system sort of eliminates the "realness" of the game.
Would Ken Griffery Jr. really want to be riding the bus and staying in Motel 6 managing a low A team? Michael Jordan coaching baseball..... what? why? Again, everyone's free to play how they want but IRL you don't have the option to just hire anyone who ever put on a jock strap to be your coach. You can only hire coaches who are interested in being coaches lol.... OOTP mirroring that is a good thing. At least IMO. |

But OOTP doesn't mirror the reality you're describing at all. The overwhelming majority (probably >98 percent) of former players can be turned into coaches. I wouldn't think twice about Griffey not being able to be a manager if, say . . . I couldn't also reanimate and hire a literal 129-year-old Babe Ruth to be a manager in 2024 (which you can do). Or even if you couldn't get every other member of the '90s Mariners. In testing out the limits of the "turn into coach" option, I was able to get John Elway, John Rocker, and Macho Man Randy Savage to be the coaches of a Dominican Summer League team.
Is it realistic for Griffey to randomly agree to be a MLB manager while he's presumably living a great life? Of course not. But it's more likely than John Rocker becoming a pitching coach in the Dominican Republic. I'm not sure why I'm able to do the latter but not the former. |

The others all can be. |

The only reason the turn into coach wouldn't be available for a player (as long as you're in commish mode etc...) is if we have them tagged as already having been turned into a coach. It's possible that something in the default template may have tagged them somehow with that.

Now THAT is a coaching staff right there. Rocker would be so loving the Domincan town folk. Macho Man would be dressed in his wrestling gear and coaching with the same vocals that he did his wrestling interviews with, obviously... Not sure where Elway fits in, but sure why not. I'm just picturing this now. That would be a reality show that I would watch ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
