Infuriating & Great!
I have played OOTP before and recently started playing again at OOTP 23. I played some classic 80s baseball trying to get better results for a Yankees team that got consistently disappointing results in real life. But I never even finished a season because my OCD wouldn't let me sim too many games without putting my hands on to try and improve the results and besides, the real draw was designing a Major League from the ground up.
So I started a league in 1900. Not really know what I was doing, I didn't force 1900 stats to be the baseline because I figured I could always learn what I was doing along the way and go back and start a new league from scratch once I knew what was what. So, some of the stats are completely out of whack, like strikeouts and home runs. Way too many of each. I keep tweaking the numbers to tighten it up a bit and it's improving but I still have quite a way to go.
Now since I created this league myself, named the teams, etc.... my OCD absolutely requires me to play every game pitch by pitch, especially after creating a full minor league system (AAA, AA, A, short season A, Rookie) and going through over a hundred rounds of an inaugural draft to fill them all. I hand picked every player my team has and I'm going to see every major league pitch they do! Spring Training was agony, everybody sucked and I was constantly looking up information to better understand why my 4 star and higher players were so bad. I know a small sample size can produce ANY result in baseball (that's part of the beauty of the game) but I at least wanted to improve my odds so I learned a bit and found that certain ratings should carry more weight and some 3 star guys are better than 3.5 or even 4.0 star guys.
After an agonizing Spring Training which took me many months to play through, I did manage to finish around .500 ball. My star 1B got hurt and missed the second half of Spring Training along with the beginning of the season. After all this, we had a surprising start to the regular season. By the end of April we're playing .700 ball, but the home runs are getting annoying (both for and against). Even by modern day standards it's ridiculous! My 1B finally came back in the 2nd week of the season, and by early May he's leading the league in average and home runs (32!!!!). Apparently all those home runs were too much for him so he broke his kneecap and he's out for the season!
Now before OOTP 24 goes away, I decide to buy it because it looks like I can't import a league older than one previous version. (slick move) I put way too much into my league to give it up when I decide to buy some future version but it turns out OOTP 24 is a disaster! Literally the ONLY good thing I can say about it is that the 3D animation is nicer. I imported my league, played a couple of games after my mid-May teamwide meltdown. My pitcher who just can't throw a strike that doesn't leave the park is busy giving away another game, so I hit the next batter. Old school baseball. As expected, the hitter charges the mound, both the pitcher and the hitter get ejected, but then...... my pitcher is still on the mound. The batter is still on first base. So now I'm curious....... I do it again..... and again..... and again and again and no matter how many batters I hit, it says ejection but the players are still in the game.
I test this again by importing another league (my MLB from 87) and I wait for a big hit from the opposing side and then plunk the next batter, no fight, hit the next one and again ejection in the text but both players still in the game. Not only are the ejections not working, but the score isn't even correct. After walking in runs, the AI team magically got 5 extra runs added to their score and I even score 3 by hitting batters!
So now I'm looking at OOTP 25, great reviews after OOTP 24 didn't do so well, but I'm a bit concerned. If I import my league to 24, things just don't seem to work right, so I've been playing OOTP 23 content in my misery watching my stars fail and blow a huge lead in the standings. I would love to get my league into OOTP 25 but I'm hesitant to buy it because honestly, if I can't play my existing games, I just have no desire to start over. Does OOTP 25 address the bugs that were never fixed in the previous version? Will I be able to import a stable league from OOTP 23?
If ANYONE had actually bothered to read all this, I'd really appreciate any insight you can give me. I'd love to play the new version but I really have no desire to come out of pocket for 25 only to end up playing 23 again.
