1934 MVP Voting

I just came across this at the wonderful baseball-reference.com:

http://baseball-reference.com/awards...34.shtml#ALmvp

Does anyone have a clue why Gehrig was only fifth? Cochrane was a catcher but his team didn't win the World Series. Did baseball writers have easier access to crack that year?

Gehrig won the Triple Crown, posted an 1.172 OPS, and gets fifth in the voting. Weird.

I don't know much about that time period, but just perusing the site, the Tigers were 75-79 inm 1933. They made a huge jump to 101-53 in '34, the year which Cochrane was sold to the Tigers. That year, I'm guessing, they considered him the sparkplug that got the team going, thus the MVP award. Cochrane was also the manager of the team, so he had a considerable impact on that team. Also, the World Series, has no impact on MVP voting.

IMO we are best off abandoning that sinking ship that is Off Topic to the rats infesting it and just starting a whole new Baseball Forum from scratch.

Voters tended to look well beyond the stats with the MVP whenever they started awarding it regularly. And of course the voters tended to be rather fickle also, if you didn't have a good reputation with the writers then those players were often overlooked.

Cochrane also won the MVP in 1928 and had less that spectacular stats.

I would just like to say right now, that since I have been a member - last year at this time - I have HATED Draft Dodger. I put up with his smart *** comments all the time and I am sick of it. I wish there were some way I could block him so I didn't have to read his stupid comments. He thinks he's such a hard *** - I bet he's some single 50 year old who sits there and looks at porn all day, hence his stupid picture of Shakira. Screw you, DD, and don't bother posting in my threads anymore because I will disregard them from now on.

PS - Is there any way you can block someone? Any input would be appreciated (unless its from the Shakira-sexually obsessed 50 year old ****)

You have some anger issues. I don't see why you should dislike the guy. I certainly don't. The only guy I dislike is that long long name guy and thats just because he has tried/is trying to trash me. Eh, oh well.

Yikes! I am feeling really badly now; I AM a 50 year-old with serious Shakira lust issues...

and I always thought that was a GOOD thing. Now I have to seek counsel from Dr. Phil.

As the OTBL says, "Why so much hate"? If anyone should have negative toward the other, I think it should be me, but I don't. Why do you hold a gruddge against me? I actually like #9, it's my real baseball number (until I had to settle for #48 after my teammates took #9 and #47, aaah).

Er... Trying to steer it back on-topic...

FWIW, here are the Win Shares for each of the top 5 vote getters in the 1934 MVP balloting:
1. M. Cochrane, 23
2. C. Gehringer, 37
3. L. Gomez, 31
4. S. Rowe, 28
5. L. Gehrig, 41

Bill James would conclude that Gehrig should have been the MVP in 1934, or at least it should have been a two-man race between Gehringer and Gehrig. In any case, I would agree Yzlin's guess that the Tigers big turnaround and the fact that Cochrane was also the manager swayed the voting.

The Tigers won 100 games? I think some kind of higher power should have won MVP.

It was Cochrane's intangibles, leadership skills and clutch hitting that won the MVP for him.
