1934 MVP Voting
I just came across this at the wonderful baseball-reference.com:
http://baseball-reference.com/awards...34.shtml#ALmvp Does anyone have a clue why Gehrig was only fifth? Cochrane was a catcher but his team didn't win the World Series. Did baseball writers have easier access to crack that year? Gehrig won the Triple Crown, posted an 1.172 OPS, and gets fifth in the voting. Weird. |

I don't know much about that time period, but just perusing the site, the Tigers were 75-79 inm 1933. They made a huge jump to 101-53 in '34, the year which Cochrane was sold to the Tigers. That year, I'm guessing, they considered him the sparkplug that got the team going, thus the MVP award. Cochrane was also the manager of the team, so he had a considerable impact on that team. Also, the World Series, has no impact on MVP voting.

Voters tended to look well beyond the stats with the MVP whenever they started awarding it regularly. And of course the voters tended to be rather fickle also, if you didn't have a good reputation with the writers then those players were often overlooked.
Cochrane also won the MVP in 1928 and had less that spectacular stats. |

You have some anger issues. I don't see why you should dislike the guy. I certainly don't. The only guy I dislike is that long long name guy and thats just because he has tried/is trying to trash me. Eh, oh well.

Yikes! I am feeling really badly now; I AM a 50 year-old with serious Shakira lust issues...
and I always thought that was a GOOD thing. Now I have to seek counsel from Dr. Phil. Talk about your changing day in your life... |

Er... Trying to steer it back on-topic...
FWIW, here are the Win Shares for each of the top 5 vote getters in the 1934 MVP balloting: 1. M. Cochrane, 23 2. C. Gehringer, 37 3. L. Gomez, 31 4. S. Rowe, 28 5. L. Gehrig, 41 Bill James would conclude that Gehrig should have been the MVP in 1934, or at least it should have been a two-man race between Gehringer and Gehrig. In any case, I would agree Yzlin's guess that the Tigers big turnaround and the fact that Cochrane was also the manager swayed the voting.

Wasn't 1934 the year all those mushrooms got sold accidentally in stores?

The Tigers won 100 games? I think some kind of higher power should have won MVP.
