Replay--Baseball from 1901 to 2023
This is the second version of my attempt at replaying baseball history from 1901 to 2023. My mistake was in not anticipating how much work it would be, so I'll only do one or two seasons a day. So here goes nothing.
Here are some ground rules: No real-life transactions and lineups (which are traditional). Game recaps and box scores on. AI settings are 50/40/25/10. Trading difficulty will be at medium. Trading preference will be balanced. Will be in commissioner mode, and not manage any team during the recap (wouldn't want a bias now, would we?). Expansions and moving of teams will be as normal. Missed seasons (such as for World War I and II) will be applied. Retirements will not be according to history. Most other settings are default. (SP means starting pitcher, Ca means catcher, RP means relief pitcher, 1B is first baseman, 2B is second baseman, 3B is third baseman, SHS is shortstop, LF is left fielder, CF is center fielder, and RF is right fielder) OK, let's play ball! 1901 World Series Results
1901 World Series: Boston Americans vs. Pittsburgh Pirates
Results Game 1, October 9th, 1901, Huntington Avenue Grounds Pirates Edge Americans 1-0 to Open WS Jesse Tannehill and the Pittsburgh Pirates opened the World Series in brilliant fashion today, traveling to Boston and shutting out the host Americans at Huntington Avenue Grounds 1-0 to secure an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. Tannehill, the Pirates left-hander, threw 9.0 innings of shutout ball. Tannehill gave Pittsburgh a solid start. The left-hander allowed no runs on 3 hits over 9 innings. "Things broke our way today and that's great," Pirates manager Fred Clarke said. "It's important, though, to stay focused and not pat yourself on the back too much. We aren't done yet." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Huntington Avenue Grounds in Boston. Pirates lead 1-0 Game 2, October 10th, 1901, Huntington Avenue Grounds Leach, Pirates Sink Americans Again in Game 2 Riding the 2-hit performance of third baseman Tommy Leach, the Pittsburgh Pirates got a road win against the Boston Americans, 7-6, in Game 2 of the World Series today. Leach was 2 for 4 with a home run, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once for the Pirates, who now lead the best-of-7 series, 2 games to 0. In the top of the first, with Pittsburgh leading 1-0, the Americans allowed the Pirates to go up, 2-0, on a base hit and Boston error. "Postseason wins taste oh so sweet," said Leach after the game. Game 3 is scheduled for Saturday at Exposition Park in Pittsburgh. Pirates lead 2-0 Game 3, October 12th, 1901, Exposition Park Pirates Win to Extend Series Lead to 3-0 The Pittsburgh Pirates are one game away from a sweep after beating the visiting Boston Americans, 3-2, at Exposition Park today. Pirates right-hander Deacon Phillippe had a standout performance in which he threw 9.0 innings of 7-hit ball. Pittsburgh now holds a 3-0 advantage in the best-of-7 World Series. Chief Zimmer, who finished 5th in the AL in doubles with 29 in 1892, helped out the Pittsburgh cause in the bottom of the sixth inning with a run-scoring single. For the game, the catcher was 1-3. "They say the first rule of the playoffs is to win the home games," Zimmer said afterward. "It feels nice, but it is kind of what we were supposed to do." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Exposition Park in Pittsburgh. Pirates lead 3-0 Game 4, October 13th, 1901, Exposition Park Boston Breaks Through for First Win in World Series; Now Trails 3-1 In a remarkable effort, Cy Young single-handedly kept the Boston Americans in the playoffs. The Boston Americans right-hander threw a complete game shutout on the road to prevent a Pittsburgh Pirates sweep, striking out 1 along the way. The Americans needed all he had, as their own offense struggled to get into gear. The 4-0 Boston win means the club now trails 3-1 in the best-of-7 series. Young went the distance for Boston, allowing no runs on 8 hits, while striking out 1. "There's nothing like the postseason," said Young, "to ramp up the pressure." The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Exposition Park in Pittsburgh. Pirates lead 3-1 Game 5, October 14th, 1901, Exposition Park Pittsburgh Pirates Take World Series It's party time in Pittsburgh. The confetti is flying and residents are smiling. The Pittsburgh Pirates have reached the mountaintop, capturing the 1901 World Series today. They defeated the Boston Americans 4-3 at Exposition Park to officially wrap up the series 4-1. Asked how it feels to be a champion, first baseman Kitty Bransfield was to the point. "It feels great, like a million bucks. I'm so happy right now, not just for me but for all the guys," he said. "We put a lot of work into this and deserve to be champions." The team is planning a victory parade and fan appreciation day later in the week. Pittsburgh finished the regular season 93-47 and claimed first place in the NL. Pirates win World Series 4-1 Series MVP: First baseman Kitty Bransfield Last edited by Lord Byron; 02-01-2024 at 09:16 PM. |
