Weird (funny) contrast of defensive stats
Hey guys,
Playing with my Tigers, just wanted to share something I found kinda funny and weird at the same time. As you might be able to see on the picture, my team defense is currently the worst in terms of BABIP and Defensive Efficiency but also the best in terms of Zone Rating. I'm not 100% sure how Zone Rating is measured in this game but it could be because some of my good defenders in terms of ZR, like Pete Crow-Armstrong who is my current CF, has negative Arm Runs, and also because I have players who are good defenders on paper but lack experience at the Major League Level. This also allowed me to notice that the team might be way underperforming its FIP lol |

It sounds like you have quick fielders who get to lots of balls and then fumble them? I have never seen such a contrast between defense efficiency and zone rating. Normally they should go hand-in-hand. But, while speed is natural, handling the ball and throwing it are acquired skills. Doing it in the major leagues - larger parks, better hitters, faster runners, new teammates - can be challenging for rookies.
The other stat that stands out is third in WAR. I’m not a big WAR fan, but the limitations of the stat affect all teams, so being third in a league is a rough measure of performance nonetheless. What’s the record of this team, anyway?

Since Defensive Efficiency is tied to BABIP, horrible BABIP luck (i.e. hitting the ball where the defense isn't) can still mean that you have amazing fielders, but the opposite team still manages to hit a lot of balls in play.
Since the game is stat and not physics based, it's really hard to have a decent Defensive Efficiency in hitter friendly ballparks even with all-world defense and pitching. I would disregard the stat it the context of OOTP. |
