Historical question
Why the game doesn't use a real transaction database like OOTP? That would make the historical mode more interesting to play...

Because there isn't a real transaction database for the NHL that's anywhere near as complete as the Retrosheet transactions data. There have been attempts at building one, but even the best has a ton of omissions, estimates, and incomplete information - nowhere near good enough to produce the kind of accurate day-to-day rosters the game would need.

The Pro Sports Transactions is the website for you... they have everything trade related from 1916/17 to today. Obviously only for the NHL and the WHA, but to be honest the rest of the world isn't in the historical mode.
Maybe you should have a look, this is certainly a good resource to build a game workable database. https://prosportstransactions.com/hockey/ You only to do a search by date and you get everything... PS: I never talked about a day to day game rooster but a transaction database, even OOTP doesn't have real day to day team rooster (only game starting line up in 1901 and after).

I'm aware of that site, thanks. While it's an admirable effort, it's nowhere near complete enough to use as a transactions database for the game. I just pulled a couple of issues of The Hockey News from 79-80 off my shelf and compared their transactions section to that database: A trade was described incorrectly, 5 of 6 mid-season signings were missed, and a release was missing. Their player histories are full of notes like "date approximate" and "(?)", and it's not unusual to see players listed as being acquired by one team and then on the next line of their history traded by a different team, with no indication of when or how they changed teams.
That's not a criticism of the site at all; I get that it's a volunteer effort and quality information on NHL transactions, particularly once you go back 40+ years, can be hard to come by. But it's not remotely thorough enough to use for database purposes. |
