Game too Hard
Hey I love the game, but I find it very difficult, especially in Manager Mode, I have expectations to make the postseason but my minors sucks and the team is underachieving. How can I build a winning team? How important is speed and range? I want to hear some of the strategies you guys use because it would help me out a lot.

It's tough to give a flat out answer to some of those questions, because people prefer their own strategies; you just have to figure out which one works for you.
Personally, I lean more towards pitching, range, and hitting for average. Pitching is what keeps you in games; You can have one of the better teams in the league, but if your pitchers are giving up an average of 5 runs a game, you're going to find it hard to win. Range is something I try to keep high on most of my players, but it's important too to look at fielding percentage. Would you rather have a "A" range third baseman with a .939 fielding percentage, or a "D" range third baseman with a .989 fielding percentage? Range can save a bad pitching performance, but one error can turn the tide of a game. There's not much you can do to an underachieving team. If you're in your first season and you're expected to go to the playoffs (and your minor leaguers suck, as you say), you might be in trouble. Without any tradebait, you just have to keep your fingers crossed and hope that your players turn it around. I've seen players who seem to love to dog it for 80% of the season, then have a great September. Check out the player's consistancy. If it's "good" and they're dogging it, you might want to offer them up in a trade, because it's less likely that they'll turn it around. Or, you can leave things as they are and hope for the best. How good is your owner? That's another thing to consider with your team. If he's a bad owner, you may have to push the panic button quicker to try to get results, while if you have a good owner, you can sit back and hope the players turn themselves around, knowing that the owner won't be happy if you don't make the playoffs, but your job won't necessarily be on the line. Also, if you want to get brave, trade away the veterans that you can and replace them with minor leaguers who aren't that bad. Get good prospects for the major leaguers (just police yourself and don't rob the teams too bad until the patch comes out) and build up your minor league system. Then take the offseason to use your newly found money to pick up a few free agents. It's risky (especially when the owner expects you to be in the playoffs), but can pay strong dividends later on down the line.

Actually, "need" and "use" ARE verbs.

Difficulty level is factored into the manager mood development, team chemistry development and player contract negotiations. Also, to a small degree into player performance... think of it as if you had more difficulty dealing with the players on higher levels, resulting in players performing a little worse because they aren't feeling well being managed by you. Realistically, there are only so many ways you can adjust difficulty and all of these (to differing degrees) would help do that - and are realistic. |
