Please explain this scenario (big league contract, no service time, sent to minors, future arb)
So I signed a 22 year old starting pitcher from Canada.
He's never been in minors, no service time, clean slate everywhere. His new contract: MLB, 3 years, 2.8M each year If I send him to the minors for 1 season, does that affect anything regarding his arbitration eligibility? Would his arb get pushed back another season, and there'd be another 2.8M auto-renew on his 4th year with our org? Last edited by brotherblues; 01-19-2023 at 11:03 AM. |

If a player isn't arb-eligible, then they will auto-renew at their current salary. In this case, if he was in the minors for the full season (or even long enough to not be a super-2), then he should auto-renew for 2.8M after this deal expired. You'll still pay him the money for the current season (any contract above the min is paid in full whether the player is in the majors or minors), but you would gain that extra service time otherwise.

In addition to what Matt posted, it is important to know that players who sign at age 18 or younger have five seasons of control before they have to be placed on the 40-man roster. Players signed at age 19 or older have four seasons. Once they are placed on the 40-man roster they have three minor league options, of which they use one per year regardless of the number of times they are optioned in that year.
