Player Ratings
I assigned the option to affect ratings by statistical performance by year. I had a young player, 25, rated 46/61 who had a career year, batting in the low .300's with 49 home runs and the league MVP. Over the course of the offseason, he reduced to a 43/49! I did understand when I had a player aged 32 two years after hitting a league leading number of home runs, reduced from 61/61 to 42/42 over a period of two seasons. He was aging. But the prior player is just entering his prime.

Maybe you already know this but, for clarity, the option you are talking about doesn't change or effect any ratings. The under the hood ratings do not go up or down because of performance. What is affected is how the scout rates the player while adding in the players stats to the equation.
It is possible for a player to improve their skillsets and yet have their OV\Pot go down as Ov\Pot is based on where the player fits within the league when compared to either the same position or all players. What are the weights that are assigned to each of the last three seasons plus ratings? He could have outperformed his ratings and depending on the weight distribution not see an increase in Ov\Pot. Are these overall\potentials based on position or all players? As noted above the player could improve but still fall when being compared to all players at his position. Add in OV\POT are not the be-all, end all in how good a player is. Did his individual skills improve? |

Interesting
I looked at underlying stats and scouting reports and real life stats. His career year that I had corresponded to his real career year, both as a 24 year old, then he falls off a cliff. Are the ratings affected by his real life stats?

The main thing to remember is.. Ratings drive stats Stats DO NOT drive ratings. I have never manually created nor edited a player in my game so, what I am about to say is only my understanding of how the game works. It's entirely possible someone that does this stuff a lot will come in and correct what I am about to say. While stats do not drive ratings they can be used to create players. IE you put in the stats and OOTP creates a player with ratings that should produce close to said stats within a range of "x" and of course dependent on "dice rolls" for both games played and what the OOTP player development mode does to modify the player's skill set. I hope that is of some help.
