Random Debut for Custom Number of Teams

What is the most expedient way to set up a random debut league with a non-historical number of teams without having the inaugural draft resulting in rosters being either overly strong or diluted? If I am correct, you can only start with random players by creating a historical league. You cannot edit the structure of a historical league, however, until after the game has been created. The game creation process itself generates the inaugural draft pool, the size of which corresponds to the number of teams (and perhaps their affiliates; not sure) that were in the MLB in that historical year. So, for example, a no-minors RD league using 2021 will have an inaugural draft pool of 1200+ players. If prior to the draft you delete 20 teams to have a 10 team league, you still have the original draft pool; obviously, your initial rosters will in turn be overly strong if you run the draft at that point.

I suppose you could run the draft with all 30 teams, after which you could1) delete the players from 20 of those rosters and the 2) delete those 20 teams (just doing the latter would put all of those players in the free agent pool, in effect accomplishing nothing). I believe (please correct me if I am wrong) that those deleted players would still be eligible to be drafted subsequent rookie drafts, because they would not have any league history. One other issue would be that the I drafted players would form a free agent pool disproportionately large relative to the number of remaining teams. I think that this could be addressed by scheduling a free agent draft after the inaugural draft but before undertaking the aforementioned player / team deletion process. Roster limits or inter-draft shortlist deployment (to distinguish inaugural draft choices from free agent draft picks for each of the remaining 10 teams) could then be enforced to create an appropriately-sized initial free agent pool.

Thank you in advance for any feedback.

I was experimenting with this the other day to see if it was possible to create a random debut promotion/relegation setup (It is!).

Relating what I learned to your case... I would pick a historical year that matches as close to the number of teams you want as possible. Create the league. Add your league that you plan on using. Delete the historical league and the same inaugural draft pool will be available for your league. That's the basic concept.

You don't have to start with 2022, unless you absolutely must start with current day major leaguers. I find it most efficient to start with Random players from all eras, then pick a starting point that has the number of teams I want. For the most part, unless I want a league of less than 16 teams... there is always an option.

For dilution concerns, it will generate the players for the draft at some point after creation of your game. If you are using random debut, it will base this on the number of teams in your league... not the historical year. I use 7 rounds for historical debut for the most realistic average over the last 120 years of MLB debuts. Based on that, if I am in 2022, but my league is 12 teams... the draft will generate 84 players for the draaft by default (you can change this in the settings)... not 210.

There is a setting on the Rules tab to change the number of rounds you want players generated for. This is also a good way to override settings, and a common use would be to have more available draftable players than rounds in your draft,

I finally figured out to have a Random debut with fictional teams.

Start a fictional league with the number of teams you want.

Get to where you select your team and go into Advanced Settings

Turn off the Inaugural Draft
Click Import historical rookie & RD. Copy the stats folder line and paste it into Advanced settings - Options.

start the League in Commish Mode.

League Settings - Release all players - Delete them. (I kept all 35 yo and older per team)

Set the draft for February 1st (earlier or later, your choice) and a number of rounds to populate the league. I suggest 35 rounds. Set the draft pool reveal date soon so you can scout the players.
Run draft.

Now the only issue i might see with this is that I tried to run a draft again on March 1st and June 5th 2022 and neither time it happened, so it looks like you can only draft once per year. So your Year 2 draft will always be in January or Feb or skip the draft year 2 and put it back to December in Year 3.

First, thanks to all who took the time to respond.

Second, as relates to the quoted post:
I considered this option, but thought that since the draft that is you create is technically an amateur draft that all of the players would be rookie-year versions of themselves and therefore not have any of the older players that are found in an inaugural draft pool that seed the league initially. Are you saying that the game recognizes this as a seeding draft and creates players of all ages a la an inaugural draft?

I've created 12 team random debut leagues out of historical years featuring 16 teams and I've never found the drafts to be too strong or the talent diluted. I enjoy the extra roster depth, so I can use the normal or even high-modern injury settings.

No. they would be rookies. If you want I have hundreds of text files of players. White Sox, A's, NeL that could populate your Inaugural Draft. Most are not rookies. I have White Sox A-G and A's A-F. I also have various others.
