Base Stealing

Can we expect an improvement anytime soon? In previous versions, I don't think it was even possible to have a player like Ray Dandridge go 0-4 for a whole season.

It's definitely different than in past years, but it doesn't feel unrealistic (to me) this year. Most guys don't steal bases very frequently, even if they're relatively good at it - the high-volume base-stealers need to be amazing at it for it to be worth it. But I'd be interested to hear other people's views and experiences with it this year.

I've got a Willie Mays (79 speed, 94 stealing) with 1 (failed) steal attempt in 650 ABs. I have conservative settings, but that's crazy. I could come up with plenty of odd examples of base stealing stats that seemed to start AFTER the game engine patch.

Are his individual strategy settings any different than the team's overall?

I also don't really trust anyone (even Willie) when their stealing is better than their speed.

The game actually works the opposite way. You want stealing to be better than speed. That's why CJ Abrams steals more bases than Cool Papa Bell, even though Bell gets on base more (by a lot) and has a 6 point speed advantage.

Speed determines how often a guy attempts a steal. Stealing determines how good they are at it.

So (unfortunately) with someone like Pop Lloyd you have to turn his stealing slider all the way down or he'll have something like 24 steals and 26 caught at the end of the season (trust me, I know from experience).

I put his stealing slider set at one click from the left and now he get about 17-19 steals and is caught between 5 and 10 times or so... Which is still whacked out for a player with 94 speed and 86 stealing.

Being fast shouldn't be a penalty, but it is.

I would suggest that people are playing too much with the strategy sliders. I was doing the same earlier on. Set the overalls on base running to something approximately like today's game and then trust the engine to run, steal, hit and run. It does a much better job than it did last year IF you don't fine-tune the individual sliders too much. This seems to confuse the engine.

Sampling of my number one team's stealing (1st in conference in steals and base running):

Overall - 180 steals, 84 caught (68%)
Abrams - 42-9
McNair - 30-11
Morgan - 22-9
Aaron - 19-6
Concepcion - 17-12
Poles - 16-11
W. Davis - 10-5

Additional point of confusion: the Team Batting statistics are correct in terms of steals and caught stealing. The Team Defensive stats show total stolen bases as total attempts, so the CS percentage is way too high.

Edit to add: this was in Diamond League

I got 14-1 out of Hank + better stealing from everyone. I think running/stealing was tweaked this past week
