Negro League player import tweaks
Appreciate the re-rating of NeL players, my favourite feature of OOTP23.
Though, it's been discussed on the main and historical simulation board that some of the ratings need a tweak. Especially, pitcher movement, and to a lesser extent, control. In pretty much any historical league with the color barrier turned off, almost all of the top pitchers in a given year end up being integrated former NeL players. And it looks like it's mostly due to unrealistically high movement ratings.
For example, in a 1927 single-season replay, I found 22 of 64 NeL starters were given 80 movement ratings, corresponding to a predicted 0 HRs allowed in the editor, with no AL/NL starters getting the same 80 rating. I imported a few other seasons (1920, 1931, 1946), and in general, NeL pitchers tended to have movement ratings centered about 65-70 while AL/NL pitchers' movement ratings centered about 55-60. Control ratings also seem a bit high, being on average around 5 higher for NeL pitchers than AL/NL ones.
Even taking into account the data limitations of the NeL database, it looks like there is something askew in assigning ratings. Pretty much all these pitchers, given enough innings, allowed at least some HRs in the OOTP database, but the default import rates them as a 0 HR allowed pitcher. AL/NL pitchers with similar HR allowed stats, such as Lefty Grove, tended to only get movement ratings of 65-70.
On the other hand, NeL batter ratings look reasonable for the most part.
I've looked into this a bit, so let me know if I can provide you with more info.
