Warming up relievers
By default I have always disabled the need to warm up relief pitchers. The reason that I've always done this is in more video-game-ish baseball games, if you don't keep tabs on the guy who you warmed up he would literally burn up alllll of his stamina warming up, as opposed to getting himself warm and then just keeping himself ready. So if you didn't monitor it extremely close, you'd get yourself into trouble.
That led me to just always shutting off the option in OOTP. But knowing that OOTP is a smarter game, I guess I probably should ask.... If you do use the option to warm up relief pitchers, will they act responsibly and get warm and then stop throwing? Or will they recklessly throw 10000 pitches and gas themselves if you don't keep checking back on them? |

There is an option to have the relivers automatically sit down once they are warm so as not to burn themselves out. I think it's been in the game since at least v21? Maybe longer?
The only thing is they don't have a "stay warm" setting where they stay loose if that kicks in. However they also don't go cold fast either when they auto-sit. In my experience their warm status will remain for a few batters and into the next inning if outs come fast. Auto-sit works well and is what I do. Monitoring a guy that has sat down isn't anything like monitoring a guy to not burnout. |

Thanks for this info. Sounds like there's some options in place to make it more realistic and give you more control than what other games offer..... I think I might start to tinker with this a little bit.

No problem. It does work quite well in the modern 3d game. Under your lineups screens widget, there is a bullpen box, and you can see who is warming up. This makes it easy to keep an eye on and know what is happening in your pen. If they disappear it means they have sat down to conserve energy. You can check their status by simply getting them back up and they will either still show warm or they won't. If they are still warm they will sit back down on their own.

How long does it take to warm up a reliever? I had it set for awhile, and they'd go two, three innings of 'warmup' and still be registered as 'Cold'.

Are you sure they weren't sitting down then going cold? In my experience when I played with warmups it took like 2-3 batters.

On Average I would say 2-3 batters....depending if there is a mound visit or a long inning....but as a rule of thumb...I'd say 3 batters.

Doesn't a bullpen coach help?
I think there is a pop up that says when pitcher is warm. If he comes in cold, after throwing to a batter, say 6 pitches, does he get warmer? |

Wow. That's a very valid question. IRL you might not bring in your left handed pinch hitter who crushes right handed pitching if you know that the opponent has their dominant left handed reliever warm in the pen for that exact scenario. I never even thought of this - but seeing who the opponent is or isn't warming up in the pen absolutely factors into real life strategy. Maybe that's something to consider for a future release. |

You also don't see what pitchers you have warming up (if any) if the AI is managing your subs/pitching. I'm assuming that having the AI make competent pitching changes is hard enough without having to also have it properly warm up pitchers in advance.

Joining the chorus to know when AI is warming up a pitcher or pitchers, and who they are.
I really like having the warm-up option; although it's one more thing that needs to be anticipated. Easier with the DH, where no pinch-hitting for the pitcher. I have found the putting a reliever in without warmup can cause him to be wild - even throw a wild pitch. |

I do know the Developers' are looking into having the AI warmup pitchers...but it's far from a done deal I think...and there are no promises on the table. I just know they are looking into the possibility.

![]() The problem for those that want to see who the AI is warming up is... getting the AI to "know" who to warmup and when. The way it is now, especially with the 3 batter rule, it's hard for the AI to abuse this "advantage". And FWIW since it is AI it isn't a bad thing it works the way it does, IMHO. If and when this ever gets added there will, I'm sure, be a toggle. I'll toggle it "off". I can already see the threads going on and on about who the AI did or did not warm up.

I'd love to know what the holdup is. i think its kinda ridiculous that we're 24 versions into the series and the AI cant warm up pitchers yet.

I'd much rather they work on improving the AI at knowing when to change pitchers and who to bring in, than work on improving the AI at figuring out 3-4 batters in advance who they might want to bring in. |

![]() However some could argue that doing this is not much different than banning IF shifts. Both pitching substitutions and shifts had evolved into an extreme territory. Personally I hate the extreme shifts and am glad they are going away. 3 batter minimum? I don't really care either way. One can certainly argue for or against either one. |
