The career record is 478 by Lee Smith.

IMO we are best off abandoning that sinking ship that is Off Topic to the rats infesting it and just starting a whole new Baseball Forum from scratch.

When you play modern era ball, the saves record gets shattered. I did 100 years of modern-era simming, and 10 guys have 500+ saves.

If the modern era went on for another 80-90 years, I'm sure the record would be shattered many times.

I disagree. We've only had 20ish years of heavy closer usage by every team in MLB. I played out 100 years with heavy closer usage. I think that is a reasonable result. Of the guys in MLB now, Nen has a shot at 500, and if Urbina and Koch were to continue as closers into their late 30's, they'll both get 500.

You know me....gotta give some numbers to back it up.

Fifteen guys had 35+ saves last year in MLB. That is exactly 1/2 the number of teams in MLB. Therefore, one could say that an "average" closer is getting around 35 saves a year these days. So, 14 years of being an "average" closer would give a guy 490 saves. It isn't difficult at all to imagine that if baseball were to be played essential the same way it is being played today for the next 80-90 yearsm, that there would be at least 10 guys who had 14+ seasons as the primary closer.

He's good, I'll give you that. But you're not gonna touch Carey Kramer.

20 seasons
1084 games
87-19 W/L record
828 career saves
1.01 ERA
1490 K's
151 BB's

If he came into the game, it was already too late.

Matt Ginter had 55 one year for my Chicago Cubs and another year had 51. He's had like 7 straight years over 40. Plus he's only 33.

Mitch Teixeira had 56 for the ChiSox in 2048. He's my career leader in saves with 633 (104 years simmed so far). He was good, but he was no Carey Kramer!

Albert Ballesteros and Antonio Caudillo both saved 52 in my career. The all time record is by Pablo Caban with 737. The great thing is that Caban never (not once) led the league with saves in a season. He was a closer for 21 strong seasons.

Carey Kramer is untouchable, wow.

My career leader in seasons I have actually been involved in (I don't care enough about 100 season sims to include those in my own personal records) is roughly 580 saves in exactly 20 years. I think he peaked at 53 one year, though I could be off by one or two. However the guy whose name I forget also lead all career closers in that league in blown saves as well. He had a lot of numbers, but wasn't overly dominant the entire time.

But we all know it won't. Even in the 1910-50 era, where we had the same 16 team in the same cities for the entire time (arguably the most static period of any major sports league ever) the way the game was played changed immensely. I wouln't be terribly surprised if in 2030 the league leaders had 20 saves... or 5 or 70.

Oh...I agree with you there. All I'm saying is that when we set the game to sim 100 years of the way the game is played today, we shouldn't bd surprised that we see so many saves, so few 300-win pitchers, etc.
