What next?
I've used my Merry Christmas Honus PP to finish off FF related missions, and I'm sitting with a decent chunk in the bank. I'm in a gold league where I have the 4th best record overall, but still in wild card position (4 teams in my division are .630+ while the rest of the conference is struggling). So it's not necessarily imminent that I'll have an easy path to promotion. That said, I am riding a 19-game win streak and my early hitting slumps are reverting to the mean, so I want to be better prepared for a return to diamond.
Anyway, here's where I'm sitting: vR: Collins, Gwynn, Speaker, Connor, Brett, Chipper, Mauer, Rose, Vaughan vL: Collins, Rose, Speaker, Hornsby, Connor, Clemente, Chipper, Pudge, Appling Rotation: Maddux, R. Johnson, Clemens, Koufax, Seaver Bullpen: Pedro, deGrom, Willis, Corbin, Rixey, Gooden, Walsh, Spahn I purchased Connor because I wanted his switch bat and it completed the Brouthers mission, who most are playing. I feel like the obvious upgrades are Rose and Gwynn, but since I'm absolutely KILLING everyone's lefty cheese with this lineup (even the meta pitchers), I'm hesitant to remove a switch bat unless the replacement bat hits same side incredibly well. It's either that or dropping to 12 pitchers. Gwynn is more easily replaceable. Am I in Cobb/Ruth/Wagner or bust mode in terms of upgrades, or are there smaller tweaks (100-300k) that can move my team in the right direction? For example, is Berra that much an upgrade on Mauer? Do I hold out to find a Cochrane? Are there pitchers that are obvious replacement candidates?

This is really only opinion stuff, but for what it's worth;
Berra is an upgrade on Mauer, but don't overlook Chance as a (much cheaper) partner for Pudge. Most people do, probably because he is listed as a 1B, not a C. Neither Rose nor Hornsby seem able to hack it in diamond, in my experience. Lajoie is a better back up for Collins, although you need to ensure cover for Brett; Ripkin is cheap cover for both SS and 3B. Personally, I've never needed more than six in the pen. I would therefore suggest cutting one or two and platooning at LF and, if two, wherever else it seems a good idea. Spahn, Rixey and deGrom are all more effective starters than Seaver. Try one of the others as a closer/stopper - Rixey excels in that role.

Your team should crush Gold and compete in Diamond. Surprised this team is not in Diamond already? Berra is a definite upgrade to Catcher.

Team will most likely ride the Gold/Diamond yo-yo until you get one of the big cards to upgrade somewhere.

I finished last week with another 100+ win wild card season that kept me in gold. I’m playing with Berra now, replaced Rose with Brouthers against RHP, added a Pete Browning that I pulled to platoon LHP and dropped to twelve pitchers. I’m sitting at 39-10 with very little resistance, so we’ll see what happens in the postseason.

The team should have no problem in playoff contention in Diamond. I agree with rolling with 6 guys in the bullpen. If you’re able, I tend to rotate through bullpen arms freely to make sure I’m always having fresh arms. I’ve found, if you have a couple games that use up the bullpen, it could really snowball into a losing streak. I don’t have a lot of suggestions that haven’t been mentioned for hitters or SP’s. I tend to have issues finding 1B, SS, and 3B v L. But, I also don’t have Connor.
For bullpen, these are the guys I’ve been using: Righties: deGrom, Burnes, Buehler, Cole, Gagne, Smoltz, Gooden, Sutter Lefties: Grove, Rodin, Carlton, Newhouser, Blue These guys aren’t successful each year, but I rotate so much and find what works during each week. |
