baseball newbie - help me understand process on signing FA
newbie to the game of baseball. I am in offseason (january 1). just signed 4 FAs to major league contracts. They do not show up in my active roster. they were shown on a list called Designated for assignment and I have 5 days left to either put them on my 40-man roster or release them. however, my 40 man roster is full. so naturally I selected the lowest rated players in the 40 man roster (who are minor leaguers) and tried to clear the spot for my new signees. however I notice that i cannot just remove them, I have to either waive them or release them? "release" is easy to understand, and I supposed "waive" means they are still under contract but any team could pick them up like in hockey? regardless, after I "waive" them they are still on my 40-man roster and I suppose I need to wait for a certain number of days before they clear waiver? In the meantime, I am down to 0 days to sign the newly signed FAs. At this point, I am afraid to process the game as I am not sure what would happen to them. Can someone please help me understand how this whole process work?

Waive and Designate For Assignment gets a player off the 40 man roster. If no one claims him on waivers you can demote him to minor leagues. Default waiver time is three days.
If you have players in the Designate list with zero days left the game will not advance. You are not required to have 40 players on your 40 man roster. Don't fill it just to fill it.
