How Do You Get The Most Out Of a Trade?

One thing i am terrible about on OOTP is trading great players for prospects. I might trade my Lf Anna Kournikova after the season or definitely after 2036 for prospects. Obviously, i have to find a team that can afford her but i want great prospects back in return. How do you suggest i do this?

You might have to add a draft pick or a mediocre rookie. Or a dead beat players of theirs to help them free up space.

What kind of league are you running that has Anna Kournikova? I couldn't trade her in her prime lol.

Yea, why do you want to trade her? She's easily worth arbitration money.

Wait until she's ready to become a FA and if you're not in contention near trade deadline that's the time to trade her. Some team in the race won't mind trading for a rental player.

You make the trade to get more value back. You wait until pending fa and her value drops significantly.

My EBL vs MLB league. shes a self created player and her stats are based of of real stats from High Heat 2002 which i played til 2010-11 when i found OOTP 11. Martina Hingis, Annika Sorenstrom? & Billie Jean king are also in the league but none are as good.

Yeah i decided i will wait til the last possible moment to possibly trade her and others away. My payroll this year is around $160 M, next year projected at $197 M and the year after $223M. Modern settings.

I have 4 key players that are arbitration eligible after this season. Kournikova, Mighty Joe Young (AVG stats .332 45 HR 135 RBI 90 BB 112 K 1b/rf) Walter Johnson ( 18-10 3.12 200 IP 225 k 43 BB 2 CYA so far) & Christy Mathewson (19-12 2.98 200 IP 277 k 23 BB will win 2nd CYA this season.)

if you can get a reasonable contract extension, could give you 1-2 more years before you trade before it breaks the bank. It may reduce # of viable trade partners (however, multiple years to look for trades ameliorates that a bit), but still get a good return with extra years of production (if warranted/can fit in).

Hard to keep a leadoff player over others. downgrades at any batting position 2-6 on your team of similar amounts are probably larger losses to runs scored over 162g than at leadoff.

ages, financial realities and such.. didn't look at all variables...

front-loading while you can afford it will give an extra year to figure it out too. I like to shape payroll for future as much as i can. can avoid the problem more often or delay need to trade further more often. ==> more choices, more comparisons, better return with no obligations as you pick and choose over a longer period of time..

While i am not afraid to trade a great player a bit early, in general i try to squeeze as much as i can while still getting a decent return.. can do all sorts of things to maximize how many you can pay at one time, sometimes that means letting someone go, too. It's painful when it is a great player, but realities of bad financial decisions are always worse.

Keep trading players like her for prospects and tomorrow never comes.

I think you do want to trade her nearer to FA. The value goes down some but you can still get good prospects for her. You do want to actually have a competitive team and unless you're stacked at her position she does seem to be a quality option.

If you're otherwise not competitive trading her for prospects (and/or picks if you have that turned on) can be a good strategy. This helps you secure a higher draft pick by being less competitive while also getting more prospects in trade.

I find the very best teams in OOTP are always good as they reach a critical mass and can always trade veterans for prospects at appropriate time to keep a strong farm system. The next best teams are very good some years and very bad other years. The lower tier of teams tend to always be in the middle. If you're not able to get to the always good tier, it's worth playing for the good-bad tier rather than the always middling tier. High first round picks matter a lot so you want to get some of them as a way to improve your team if you're not consistently dominant.

Keep extending players like that and your window eventually closes. You have to trade some of your core for future pieces.
