Which Pitcher Would You Choose for Cy Young Award?
Just had a tight Cy Young race between two pitchers:
Pitcher A 16-4, 2.86 ERA, 207 IP, 256 K (lead league), lead league in WHIP (1.00), HR/9 (0.6), and WAR (9.1) Pitcher B 19-2, 1.99 ERA (lead league by far), 194 IP, 195 K, 1.06 WHIP, 0.8 HR/9, 6.2 WAR Pitcher A: FIP: 2.27 ERA+: 161 GS: 32 Team: 99-63 Pitcher B: FIP: 3.07 ERA+: 229 GS: 34 (lead league) Team: 99-63 Yes, both teams had the same exact record. The two pitchers didn't meet in the regular season. They met in the playoffs and Pitcher A's team won, but Pitcher B had the better outing and got stuck with a ND. Who would you write in 1st place on your ballot? Last edited by KBLover; 05-08-2021 at 01:20 AM. Reason: Added info |

B for me. I don't go with the analytics and such. So B passes the eye test.

Nineteen wins is nineteen wins. My pitchers stats aren't going to get me to the playoffs wins are. I'm not an analytics guy either. Just win baby.

Pitcher A any day of the week... More IP, More K's, Less HR/9 , Almost 1/3 more WAR than Pitcher B This pitcher almost gave you 9 wins above an average starter. The other only 6. |

Kershaw vs. Greg Maddux? That 9.1 WAR sticks out to me.

Team record? To me, that actually does make a difference. I'd be inclined to go B, otherwise.

B- Some of that WAR is from having pitched more innings. B did a better job or preventing runs from scoring.

A, I am 65 but love analytics and agree with the WAR and Ks.

I think it really comes down to what you want that award to be in your league. Do you want it to go to the guy who pitched the best, the guy with the most wins, the guy with the lowest ERA, etc?
I think A clearly wins in the columns that determine the quality of pitcher he was - lower WHIP, lower FIP, higher WAR with more innings pitched than B. But part of me is still traditionalist enough to see B's 19 wins and 1.99 ERA as hard to ignore. I'd go with A. |

I'll take A but it's close.
