Just wondering what playing time for lines to others use for
the 1917 season with three lines going and knowing back then the first line played most of the game i was thinking 40/20/5 or should i do 35/25/5 or something else any comments would be appreciated |

There actually was no 3rd line in 1917/18. The teams averaged 8 skaters per game and dressed 7 to 9 skaters. This was only a few years after starting players were expected to play the entire game minus penalty minutes. They would often have injury stoppage.
I know FHM allows 12 skaters in 1917 (I guess it gets a bit silly to have less), that's why you don't have enough players when you start early seasons. Toronto, for example, would intend to play 6 forwards and 2 dmen the whole game. But the dmen would get spelled off by forwards often (Reg Noble played rover and many positions in his career). NHL.com has every boxscore in history but no minutes played. So best guess with no actually footage or detailed newspaper deployment description as such: On average (differed per team) Starting 3 Forwards: 40 minutes Starting 2 D: 50 minutes 3 reserves: 17 minutes each at forward, 1 or 2 also combining for 14 minutes at D. Remember each starter would average 3 or 4 penalty minutes per game (minors were 3 minutes and didn't end with a goal), so the minutes come up a bit short. Hope that helps. Mark |

As for the FHM game, I play first pair 35 min and don't push the forwards beyond recommended for 1st line. So 26/22/12.
What matters with so few players is how many special teams each player is on. My 4 dmen always play about the same amount no matter how I set them. |

Well in FHM 1917 you only need 14 players (8F, 4D, 2G). Teams didn't have 2 goalies. A skated would replace an injured goalie. If the goalie sucked, they'd replace him mid season.
In later seasons, if FHM wants 17 players, then you need to dress 17 players. |
