Machado .183/.280/.315

I'm playing my 2nd season as the Padres and through 56 games (a little over 1/3) & 255 PA that is Machado's slash line. This following a year he went .317/.395/.554. He's lost 350 on his OPS in just one year... WTH?!?

No injury... It looks like I have moved him up and down the lineup - mainly because he started so slow. 3, 4 & 5 spots are as bad OPS-wise or worse.

Any advice, thoughts, feedback appreciated.

If his ratings are good and you trust them don't do anything.

I hear you. (60/50/65/55/60 batting ratings - very high accuracy from my scout). It is just frustrating and hard to be patient when he is one of at least a couple players struggling that should be better.

Since my original post in 40 more PAs he's improved to .187/.278/.338 (+21 OPS) - he was part of a 15-3 beat down of the Dodgers at Dodger Stadium...

Rafael Devers (55/65/60/40/50 - very high) - got him at the deadline season one - is slashing .203/.283/.416 in 220 PA vs 2021 .319/.373/.536 in 154 PAs.

I appreciate the reinforcement of pressing on and not trying to let a small-ish sample size get to me.

It's frustrating to see, but really you can only do what you're doing, sit him for a couple days, bat him lower in the order, etc. I just started a season with Mallex Smith as my leadoff hitter and he was just horrid for almost 2 months. First I put him in the 8 spot, then finally I stopped playing him except as a defensive replacement. He started hitting, then my SS Ehire Adrianza suddenly went from red-hot to ice cold, and I flip-flopped them again.

And Smith does not have Machado's bat. 250 AB is enough to be concerned about, but I usually start tinkering after 100 AB of bad hitting.

Its common for several players to have down years at the same time. Its also common for several to have career years at the same time. That's when you finish first.

Off years may be less frustrating for me because I keep my payroll low and only expect to finish first when players have career years. If you're spending a lot of money you're putting a lot of pressure on yourself!!!

Thanks all for the advice! The offense is starting to come around a bit. 17-9 record in June! Also, we've gone from bottom 3-4 in the league in offensive stats to mid-pack.

Machado update: .191/.278/.339 in 266 PAs

Slowly getting better.

For this save we dominated offensively in my first season but didn't have the arms to compete in the postseason, so traded a couple of guys on offense to get those arms. It's paying off on the pitching side: 1st in bullpen ERA, 2nd in Ks, 3rd in FIP, RA & Pitching WAR, 4th in starter's ERA.

Still 6.5 behind the Dodgers (not going to catch them), and 3 out from a Wild Card @ 40-34.

I'll keep updating on this thread unless someone thinks a new one would be better.

Thanks again!

UPDATE:

Moved the save to OOTP 22. Aug 12, 2022 and here is Machado's slash line:

.221/.299/.408 in 401 PAs (+90 in OPS since late June)

Thanks again all for the advice on patience...

Yeah sometimes his morale and physical conditioning makes a difference too. Also make sure you go to staff roles and pick what is going on with the training staff. I feel like that makes a big difference in short term performance but over the course of a whole season its not like youll have a whole new player.

So if you take the previous slump out of YTD he's performing as himself.
