Question How do you guys play OOTP?

Hey everyone. I am just as excited as you all are on the new release of OOTP 22! With the new game just dropping, I am curious to hear how you all play? Personally, I like to play a realistic MLB franchise by taking over a team with simming day by day and checking the box scores. I want to find new ways to enjoy the game so any information is appreciated!

I like to take control of a team and sim each game, looking at the box scores, and then control the team in the playoffs - that way I get get through several decades and have a "career." Loving perfect team as well.

I usually have one modern day game and at least one historical. I am manager and GM and play out every game. Sometimes I’ll set up a fictional league where I just GM and see how it goes.

I create complex universes with tons of leagues and teams from all over the world. I tinker with them until they're just right...

Then I sim 30 years for history and to get rid of all the coaches who never played. Then I fall down a rabbit hole looking at all the history, stories, records. Then I find one thing that's not perfect and I knock it all down and start world building from scratch. That's what usually happens.

I manage to keep a small fictional league along side it. 16 teams, one country. Those tend to last longer.

Bobby, how do you like being the GM & Manager? I feel like i have to either be the Manager or just the GM. I used to do the Combo but fell in love with the Manager only part of it. Only issue is that I want to be the Rockies or Pirates for the rebuild aspect but also want to enjoy coaching.

I like to play as Manager and GM of a present day team. I usually play the game of my Ace and simulate the other 4 starters. I feel more connected to the team by playing every 5th game but I can still get through seasons at a decent pace. I also play every playoff game.
This year, I let my daughter pick my team. She chose the Reds. That seems like a fun team and I like the division. Can’t wait to start up tomorrow.

I like creating a fictional universe with leagues in different countries, and go week by week reading the news articles, standings, etc. I have a lot of fun seeing the fictional stories, dynasties, and hall of famers that come about.

Fictional league, real players. Imported based on their career averages.

26 teams. 162 games. Playoff structure: 2 wild card teams for play-in and 3 division winners. AL and NL leagues with DH in AL. No interleague play right now.

This is my 14th year/season. I play each game out, action-pitch mode in Classic 3D. I try to time my season with the real MLB season but started a week early this year - just couldn't hang on!

Also have AAA and AA franchises for each team but let the computer manage those games.

Love it, love it, love it.

OOTP 21 was my first year. A refugee from APBA. I acted as GM and field manager for my Phillies. Tinkered with Pirates and Orioles spending $$ on FA. Started historical 1952 and 1960 seasons, plus 1932 with no color line. Great to import from 21 to 22. Also great to start anew season.

I've been playing the same Athletics franchise since OOTP 16! I play every game and it's super fun to have that deep "connection" with my players lol. I'm in 2037 now, loads of fun. Looking forward to this year's advancements!

I revel in playing my fictional league, writing dynasty reports, and watching teams and players evolve over a season and their careers. I have never played Perfect Team because it doesn't interest me. In addition to this, I don't play with real-world teams. OOTP is a hobby I am unable to give up

I play larger fictional leagues(200 plus teams) with a minor league(non-affiliated) and use fictional and real MLB players(from 1965,1977 and 1990) and play in commish mode.

Last year I played a 10 level Promotion/Relegation league, starting with one of the worst teams in the bottom league and seeing if I can bring them to a title in the top level.

That's impressive! I played P/R a few times, but only a 5 level league. It was fun, and may re-visit that universe again someday.

Any chance you could send this as a Quickstart? Not quite sure how that works, but would love to give it a go.

I'm not sure how to do that. I know the setup took adjust financials down significantly in each lower level and adjust created player modifiers so that Level 10 draft picks were Level 10 quality players not Level 1, and vice versa, though I did allow trading and free agency between levels, and obviously players would move levels when their teams moved.

Also had to do all promotions and relegations manually because the automatic ones are by the best record, not the WS winner at each level, and I wanted the playoff champions to be promoted, not the top records.

One other minor annoyance I found a work-around for was that I wanted promotions and relegations done before any offseason events started, but if one level had a long, drawn out playoff while another had sweeps they would not sync right. The solution I found was to put all levels into an Association with a (meaningless) tournament (I think I had the two last place teams play each other). This would hold all leagues offseason events until after the Tournament was over.

GM & manager is the only way to play in my book. It allows you to really get to know your league and universe. Also...I'm not about to let the AI fiddle around with my roster.

I'm glad to see I'm not alone. I usually create a whole world full of leagues and then sim to build up history and go through it and check on the stories and just watch my creation live. It is so much fun to watch a team I created build a dynasty and follow it through the years.

I have a longstanding fictional league that's been running since OOTP15 I think - I import it to each new version, and just let the league run, following the history and great players, watching games, or whatever. It's currently 2175 in my league .
