Create A Player - Sim Career - Take Over As GM

Has anyone ever done the following, and if so, is there any issue to be aware of before investing the time to start this save?

What IÂ’m considering doing in 22, is to, like the title says, create a player (probably in an MLB game), and follow his career along. At some point after his retirement, take over the team he retired as a GM for and use the same name/age. Along the way I may rename other GMs after rival players to mine. Beane became GM of the AÂ’s 9 years after he retired, which I would call extremely quick, but heÂ’s the only data point we have that IÂ’m aware of.

This is a different way to pick a team so to speak, as the usual process is “pick your favorite franchise”, or “pick the team with the worst record”. It randomizes your team to give something different, but not without reason. Pull straws and get to be the Yankees GM out of nowhere? Yea right... But if you retired with them, it would make sense.

I also know this means (especially if you make your player 18 at creation), that most real life players will have retired before I start. This gives the league a fictional component but one thatÂ’s still very much tied to the MLB. I primarily play fictional because I get players mixed up with real life, and sometimes feel IÂ’m missing out with all the MLB parks/logos/uniforms.

I may even start this on 21 since updated rosters wonÂ’t mean as much to me. These rosters will be at least twenty years deep in the history books before I take over a team. Import to 22 at retirement of my player.

Happy to hear what do yÂ’all think, and am open to suggestions!

You should have no issues with that at all.

That's a really neat idea too.

Other Player/GMs

Yes, your idea is an A+ in creativity.

Just a few other examples beyond Beene of how long it took for players to become GMs:
  • Charlie Gehringer: Retired = 1942 then GM = 1951
  • Eddie Collins: Retired = 1930 then GM = 1933
  • Hank Greenberg: Retired = 1947 then GM = 1951
  • Ruben Amaro, Jr.: Retired = 1998 then GM = 2009
  • Kenny Williams: Retired = 1981 then GM = 2000

That sounds great, thanks for the feedback! And thanks for the heads up on the other players who made that transition. Maybe I'll aim to be like Eddie Collins and have a quick turn around to get started! Considering either taking over the year immediately following retirement, but if the team is still good, wait for a down year (backstory - current GM gets canned and former player (who's been "scouting" or whatever is brought in for fan interest?). May also wait for more real players to retire depending on how long everybody plays for.
