Pitching prospects with movement issues -- will they improve?
My St. Louis River Walkers are in the offseason between 2029 and 2030 and need to make some position player upgrades.
I have two highly rated pitching prospects (Ron {Peterson and Kurt Halter) at Memphis -- they stuff and control are good to outstanding, but their movement ratings are very low. Peterson is a 35 and Halter a 30. Ratings scale is 20 to 80. Peterson is projected as a top-line starter while Halter seems better suited as a closer. They are both fairly young, Halter will turn 24 in the offseason and Peterson just turned 24, but both are about the age they should be establishing themselves in the majors. Will one more year in the minors allow them to improve their movement, or are they are what they are. Good pitchers but home-run machines. Peterson pitched 21 innings in the majors in 2029, and allowed six homers (2.6 HR/9). Halter pitched 5.2 in the bigs and allowed five homers (2.82 HR/9). Should they be used as trade chips, as I already have an established rotation for 2030, and other good better/balanced pitching propects. Last edited by rink23; 10-08-2020 at 11:24 PM. |

I wouldn't bank on their HR suppression improving
That doesn't mean they can't be good pitchers. They would, of course, get better results in a HR suppressing environment, and worse results in a high HR environment I would try to convince you they weren't very good, and then pick them up on the cheap. Then I'd use them as hybrid starters, paired with a right-handed starter, because they are too good to be 1 inning relievers. Quote:

I wouldn't bank on them being great starting pitchers. They could be good relievers, but I would probably look to move them if I was running this team.

I think petersen is going to be a great starter. He will give up home runs, but most will be solo shots. Compares to the likes of Kershaw and Blyleven.

I ended up trading Halter along with another league ranked top 25 prospect, along with a 29-year AAA first baseman and a AA catcher, I am well stocked at both those positions, for a 26-year-old outfielder who just entered his arbitration years and finished in the top 10 in the MVP voting.
I was in desperate need of a right-handed power hitting outfielder. He's also a leader, which I was in need of. Peterson is one of my six starters in spring training, and has pitched well in his three starts, but will likely spend the season at AAA. If thrives as a starter, he'll probably make the team late this season or next. If he struggles, he'll get dealt or turned into a reliever. |
