Major League Service Time

Folks:

I'm kinda disappointed in the way OOTP5 figures out who is eligible for arb, then free agency. It appears that if you play 1 day in a season, you get credit for having been in the league the entire year. Now, I understand that works for some players, but for most, they shuttle around a bit between the minors and bigs.

Is there any way to cause OOTP5 to use the MLB rules, i.e., actual service time?

Alternately, could I somehow "trick" the game into thinking that a player only has 1 year, instead or 4?

Unfortunately, as it is now, there isn't a way to edit ML service time.

Hmmm...well, then let me ask this: How does the game logic figure out how many years existing players have in the majors? In other words, when I begin a season, how does the game know that someone played in the minors or majors last year?

I believe you got it right when you said one day equals one year. So if a player has stats showing up for major league service on his career screen, then that is one year of time served towards arbitration/free agent eligible.

Not positive about this, but that's how it appears.

Thanks!

I'll test this out and see what I can do.

Okay, I tested this theory, and it's got a hole. Several of my players show as having one or two years experience on the salaries screen, yet they are arb eligible. That's not right...

Wonder if there's some hidden attribute that causes a player to get flagged as arb eligible, even before 3 years. This is disappointing.

And that one day = one year method just kills the CPU run teams, 'cause they're always shuttling guys up for a week here or there, especially at the end of the season. By the time these prospects are ready to produce in the majors, they're arbitration eligible.

I hope that in v6 we can add depth to this area.

I'm surprised this feature was even included, as it does add quite a bit of complexity to things. Thanks for all the reponses!

Sure. Just edit the contract so they have the years left that you want rather than letting the game engine handle it (i.e. give a first-year player a 6-year, $300,000 contract). You'll have to give up on arbitration or calculate it yourself, though. This was more useful before there was arbitration. It'd be nice if there was some way to offer free agents arbitration, like MLB.
