Reserve clause era

I’m getting into a save that takes place before free agency. The only ways to get players is through the amateur draft and trades.

For anyone who’s played leagues similar to this, what’s your approach to improving your rosters? Do you try to anticipate when a player has peaked and flip him for prospects? Or just put all the effort into making good draft picks?

Personally, playing OOTP to me is not about winning as much as enjoying watching the players grow and become favorites. Without house rules, winning is pretty easy. So I put a premium on making good draft picks and keeping them. In my current league, I even have house rules against initiating trades. That said, though, losing is not a lot of fun, but winning too much becomes boring, too... So my advice is to not trade indiscriminately for prospects, but only make the occasional trade to fill a glaring weakness that cannot be filed in house. You will become attached to your players more and, thus, have more fun. And when they do win, it will be special.
