I like this game, but...
there is potential for so much more imo. I started my game as head coach/gm. i like having full control, and had success in the WHL for 2 years. 2021 came and I created an expansion team (Seattle Kraken of course) had a decent expansion draft. Noticed there were some some great coaches available. (that's another thing, head coaches i guess have no job security in this game. The Stanley cup winner in my first year, and runner up in year 2, GOT FIRED. Highly unrealistic.) Anyways in my expansion draft, I drafted a few former bluejackets. Korpisalo, and Josh Anderson. Then noticed John Tortarella was available so I hired him... after all there aren't any actual head coaches who are also the GM in the NHL. I finished the off season making some key signings, signed a goalie who I had every intention of him backing up korpi. Overall lower star grade, and lower attributes.
Preseason starts and I see the lines and roles totally messed up from how I envisioned them when I built the team. Korpi wasn't playing much. My thought was "its preseason. maybe Torts is trying to see what he has. no big deal" Regular season starts and my team gets off to a very slow start.. we got dominated my first 10 games. 7 of which Torts started the goalie who I had signed to be the backup. I have players who should be be snipers and play makers, playing as grinders. overall the team is a mess. a month passes, 2 months passes and my team is horrible. I fired Torts hoping I would be able to take over and fix my team and lineup. Nope. game didn't let me. I hired another head coach and its the same crap as Torts was doing. In the 30 or games my team has played, Korpisalo (the guy I brought in to be the starter, has only played in 7 games (and hes doing well when he is in. 5-2 with a .922 S%) as opposed to the other guy who has a sub .800S%. Why aren't they playing the better goalie? I wish there was some way I can override some of the head coaches decisions when it came to player roles and who dresses and doesn't dress. I see on TV all the time Brian Burke comment all the time on how much control of his teams he really had. There was one instance where Burke insisted players were shot blockers on their skates. Its not a mandatory piece of equipment, but Burke pretty much made it mandatory by saying "I decide who plays and who doesn't, so you better wear these. Lol. |

The thing to me is that head coaches and GMs talk all the time. I KNOW GMs can sometimes have some input into lineups, etc. However, head coaches also tell the GM what they are looking for, what players are available that they'd like to have, etc. The one problem in this line, and I don't really see how it can be added, fixed, or whatever you'd like to call it, is there is ZERO communication between head coach and GM.
So, you really need to make your choices knowing that, when you hire a head coach, he will coach his way... not the way you envisioned things should be. So either live with the decision of hiring a head coach, or do it yourself. After I learned this, I tend to do all the coaching myself until I have a team that's winning 60+ games a season... then I turn that team over to a head coach and let him do all the heavy lifting
