Guarding the lines... why bother?

Vlad Gurrero has killed me for triples so I put my best fielding 1Bman in the game and have him guard lines... two times Vlad has still hit one "over first, and 1bman can't get to it" then gets a triple. What's the point of guarding lines? This is EXACTLY what I want to take away!

Just curious, are these grounders he's hitting down the 1b line or liners actually over 1b?

I've noticed stuff like this, where the PBP doesn't exactly jive with the game situation. I'll pull my outfield in, just to have a flare drop in front of the CF with A range to score a run.

If it's over first, he CAN'T get it. Like sporr asked, is it really "over first," or is it a "hot grounder down the line?" If it's the latter, then you're right, there's no point, but if it's OVER first, it doesn't matter where you have your first baseman positioned.

Does 'over first' mean over the player or over the first base bag?

I have always thought it meant over the bag.

I think PBP is "for entertainment purposes only."

Good question, Spleen. Personally, I am the opposite, that it means over the first baseman. But if it's high enough, it shouldn't matter, he's not gonna get it, whether it's over him or the bag. Still a good question, though.

I agree. This is like the ever-present DP chance, which leads people to believe that their SS and 2B are on drugs, when in fact the team DP totals are fine. I don't think the pbp changes at all due to defensive strategy, but I'm sure gaurding lines affects the outcome of the play... why would Markus bother if it didn't?

I've always imagined it being a ground ball that goes over the bag.

I'm sure the rest if you guys have the play playing out in your head when you read the pbp, right?

I really don't play out games very often. I'm more of the simming/GM type, rather than a true manager who plays out every game. And for that reason, I really don't care about small bugs in PbP.

I do. That's what makes playing out every game of a season fun for me. I would like to see a more representative pbp in the future. But I can live with it as is as long as stat totals are believable (which they are in my experience).

lmao...I forgot all about that one! I always viewed balls hit "over first" as line shots over the firstbaseman's head.

"The first pitch to Tucker Ashford is grounded into left field. No, wait a minute. It's ball one. Low and outside."

Whether it's sliding into second with a "stand up double" or a "right-handed southpaw" you could go on and on all day with Coleman!

"There's a long fly left centerfield, he got all of that one, it's to the wall, at the wall, and that ball is caught, no I mean he dropped it, wait a minute he caught it! That was the best play Greg Vaughn made of his life!"

LOL!!! They should've let him and Kiner do a game together. Would be funny as hell but you wouldn't know what was going on.
