Damn You Guru!
Spencer Torkelson - my very first draftee at 1-1 in 2020 - is wrapping up not only a Hall of Fame career, but maybe the greatest career in the history of MLB.
Currently 38, Torkelson's many accomplishments include 8 MVP awards, 13 All-Star selections (as a starter each time), 13 Silver Slugger Awards, 5 World Championships, and he's hit 4 HR in a game - twice. Nearing the end of his career, Torkelson is within striking distance of becoming the all-time HR leader (34 HR behind Giancarlo Stanton) and all-time RBI leader (161 behind Hank Aaron). With over 3,000 hits already, he's a couple of more average seasons from finishing in the Top 10 all-time in that category, too. And then in January of 2038 - entering the final year of his contract - he decides to make a trip to India. Upon returning...well, read for yourself: |

The Bondsian spike in power numbers at age 36 is clearly PED-related and we've all just spent 10 hours getting the strong impression that Michael Jordan never could move on from the game. Spencer's given you so much, let him enjoy his inner peace.

I turned off stories once a forum members pointed out how the charity storyline nerfs market size.
For the most part I dislike the storyline mechanic. They are very static us as the player generally have no bearing on the events or outcome. So I don't feel bad for turning off. Need to take a page from FM player interaction. |

What about making your own stories? I think I have seen somewhere in the forums lists which contain scenarios with actions to take triggered by the result of a dice roll. I think these have much more potential to be meaningful. Plus they potentially dig into OOTP's greatest asset - the community - for generating fresh and relevant ideas that get the most out of the game. For example, having lists for different scenarios, depending on the league you are playing. In my case, I am developing a fictional universe involving expansion etc, potentially competing leagues fighting over coveted markets, the involvement of media contracts etc. So I've been pondering how to make that come more to life using a list of potential scenarios which the game can't provide on its own. Things like - when to expand the league, when to contract, scenarios that expand a team's stadium or market size etc is a small sample of what could contribute to a meaningful 'storyline', which actually utilizes the data generated by the game. Some of it would be generated by data, others generated by chance (dice roll) or some combination. I don't think a forum section exists already with this, but in the mods section if members wanted to they could start and contribute to a list, with the theme of the list given to start with, so all contributions would align with that theme (iow, would need to clearly show how the scenario reflects the theme). Could also create some interesting discussions as to why a scenario fits a theme, how it would likely be treated by the game software, which is something only veterans of the game would know much about. Could be a game changer.

I’ve got the “Guru” story twice in my solo game.
Both times I got the same as you. I assume it’s not a good thing lol.

Just an update...
Not sure if this can be blamed on the guru or not. Torkelson hasn't experienced much of a change in his ratings, but after a great April, his season has basically went into the toilet for a couple of months before a rebound in July: April: 344/375/622, 7 HR May: 208/262/417, 5 HR June: 223/258/357, 3 HR July: 319/398/447, 2 HR My big dilemma now is, he's a free agent at the end of the year and is demanding a 2-year deal. I want him to finish his career in Detroit and pass all of those milestones as a Tiger, but I think a 2-year deal is a bad idea. |

In this situation, I would see if he would try to accept a one year deal with a team option for year two (give him at least a 30% buyout, he deserves it). If the performance tanks, you can buy him out but that way he gets some form of guarantee unless there's some huge hometown discount on the salary demand for the two years. If a sufficient discount is the case, I'd eat the two years since it's probably worth the fan boost just having him on the team and if he's a captain that'd be even better.
