Who would you take #1?

With the NBA draft coming up everyone here in Portland is getting pretty exciting about who the Blazers are going to take.

Who would you pick?

Greg Oden.

Oden is a big man that is going to win your team championships. Durant is a scorer that is gonna average over 20 a game, get the all-star appearances, but won't win the number titles Oden will. Durant is more like a T-Mac while Oden could be a Duncan or Shaq.

Same argument was made for Sam Bowie/MJ and we all saw how that turned out

Durant is no where near the player of MJ, so I can't even comprehend that argument.

Coming out of college I would say they are quite similarly situated. As Astros pointed out, no one at the time had any idea MJ would be the star that he was to become. Also, Oden has really yet to prove himself. He could just as easily turn into an Olowokandi instead of a Ewing.

It is too hard to predict championships. I do think the nucleus in Portland is better and younger (and I am a Sonics fan). So who ever they get wil have an early advantage.

I think overall Durant will be the better player. Within 3 years he may be he may be ungaurdable.

If Durant was anywhere near Jordan on defense, we could examine that comparison. As is, Durant is a very unexciting defender.

Freakishly athletic, skilled and big post guys are the rarest and most influential players in the NBA. Oden, without a doubt. Just as I'd take Duncan, Shaq, Olajuwon, Ewing or any other dominant center over Nowitski or Shawn Kemp or Vince Carter.

I'd take Durant because Olden only has a few years left in the tank.

I hate to necro a 13 year old thread. But I was listening to the 2007 redraftables on the Ringer
https://www.theringer.com/the-bill-s...-ryen-russillo

And I faintly remembered this being a topic on these boards all those years ago. I do remember being in the Durant camp before that draft.
It is easy now to go back and make fun of those that would have taken Oden. But at the time something like 80% of the GMs in the league would have taken Oden.

I guess with hindsight and where basketball was going it makes more sense now.

Glad to know that my vote in this thread shows I was on the right side of history

Simmons did say that Oden would have made it given the medical advancements we have now too, but it's pretty obvious that he wouldn't surpass Durant

Wow, a thread so old somebody talked about the Sonics as a living, breathing entity?

Listened to this one the other day. It's incredibly refreshing to see Simmons and his guests provide context for what the thoughts were on the player at the time instead of endless "lul how were they so stupid to take Oden over Durant" revisionist history you often see in overviews of sports draft history.

I remember watching Oden play at OH ST. If healthy he would have still been a good #1 overall.
